Hip Hop @ 50

A celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year & its various elements

This event will now take place on Sunday 21st April.

Hip Hop @ 50 is funded by the Arts Council and is essentially a celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year and its various elements.

The day will consist of performances from Emcees, Competition DJs, a Hip Hop Art workshop, a dance class, a Beatbox demonstration as well as, a panel discussion about the UK & Bristol's early Hip-Hop scene, hearing directly from individuals who helped build the culture locally and in the UK in those early days as well as input from artists who are still currently involved. We also have a panel discussion about the art of Rap and its various nuances. Lastly, we will be creating some new original music for release in 2024, focusing on talented upcoming artists.

- Live performances:

Headlined by Black Twang

- Hip Hop Paint Party:

Salfreckles and her team will guide the attendees through the process of creating an Acrylic paint canvas piece. The piece does have an outline, but it still lends itself to a certain amount of adaptation, so it becomes more personal. The completed pieces will be available to be taken home at the end of the class.

- Respect The DJ:

This panel will be hosted by Cutmaster Swift (DMC World Champion/ 4 Times UK Champion). He will be joined by an esteemed line up of credible DJs as well as a Vinyl Battle DJ exhibition from Mike L (UK DMC Vinyl Champion).

- Hip Hop (A Different Perspective):

This a panel discussion about the origins of the culture in the city and the UK. This discussion aims to give a real insight into what it was like in the late '70s & 80s, a discussion regarding the struggle to get the music heard, as well as the business ideas behind the building of the Hip Hop movement will make a very interesting conversation.

- So, you're a Rapper:

Funky DL is a former MOBO winner & current Music Production Awards nominee 2023. He's produced, rapped, and released more than 20 albums independently through his own label acquiring millions of streams on the way. The panel will discuss the art of being a successful rapper. Funky DL will discuss industry does & don'ts, the use of song concepts, approaches to writing, and taking responsibility for the things you say on tracks to name just a few. Funky DL will be joined by The Pugilist David J , who will be performing a spoken word piece.

- Let's Dance:

This is a fun dance session hosted by Sam Samurai & Poppin Jujitsu, covering Street Dance Locking/Poppin and Top Rock Breakdance moves.

- BeatBox:

The Beatboxer will be performing during session breaks and the afterparty. The Beatboxer will be on hand If anybody attending wants to learn how to do it.
