This March - we are launching Women Who Make and Do - an all-day market celebrating women and non-binary makers.

Taking place on Sunday 9th March, the market will host stalls from local traders selling various goods such as craft, beauty and haircare, stationery and much more. Supported by Fun Palaces, there will be local makers sharing their skills in henna, movement and various craft. There will also be activities for kids and refreshments available.

We recognise that Bristol is a creative and cultural city and would like to honour independent makers of all backgrounds for International Women's Day. Last year, we hosted All Ah Wi, a female led collective that took over Trinity for a full day of workshops and discussions to celebrate the talents and interests of women and we are keen to continue supporting and championing local women.

We’re keen to provide a wide range of stalls with original gifts and ethical products so are looking for a wide variety of traders. Speak Out was a free creative development programme for young people made possible through funding from the We Move Fund, created by Children in Need and BBC 1XTRA.

As part of the programme rapper/activist MoYah and poet and spoken word artist Sukina Noor delivered a series of workshops for young musicians and poets, offering support with writing and developing music-making skills.  These workshops where primarily aimed for young people who have lived-experience of the refugee and asylum-seeker system.

During the workshops the team offered tailored support and one-on-one mentorship to the young people who attended. We connected with translators to work with young people who wished to express themselves through Arabic -and  as a result they where able to use traditional Arabic poetic techniques during the workshops.

The young people involved in the project reflected on how the sessions offered them a safe space where they were able to fully express their identities and be themselves, and channel this into their art. For example, a participant from Brazil who spoke Portuguese was able to express himself better thanks to MoYah's ability to speak Portuguese, something that the young person had not been able to do since arriving in Bristol. Sukina observed the personal growth of the young Brazilian participant due to being able to speak his first language in the sessions, noting, "He could really experiment and let his story be told".

Facilitators, MoYah and Sukina both reflected on the confidence that the young people demonstrated by taking part and performing at Speak Out events, highlighting their creative and personal development throughout the project.

The young people who took part in these Speak Out workshops were given the opportunity to showcase their talents as part of the Bristol Refugee Festival.

In total six young people aged 16-18 took part in eight workshops, facilitated by MoYah and Sukina.

Artists Rider Shafique and Khali Ackford (I-Dentity) & Trinity team up to bring a monthly meet-up to a offer a place of support, reflection, reason & opportunity for Black Creatives (all disciplines welcomed).

Supported by Trinity, the meetups have been inspired following feedback from online workshops, delivered by Rider and Khali, as part of Trinity's community arts project What I Want To See, What I Want To Be.

Meetups are on every fourth Monday of the month.

Creative Challenges are short creative tasks that help everyone become more creative! Each challenge is different, and helps you think of different ways to do something creative. We'll have a selection of challenges for people to choose from, and lots of different materials to use. You can make pictures using card, fabrics and glues, draw  in ink and pencils, and even write poetry!

Art, writing, discussing, making, drinking cups of tea and creating!

A playful and gentle dance movement class specifically designed for people living with Parkinson’s. Bring your partner or carer along to join in too. All welcome, no previous dance experience required, just a willingness to have fun!

The classes are lead by Dancers from The Original Spinners who are trained to deliver dance to people living with Parkinson’s and currently lead sessions at Southmead Hospital.

Classes run every Tuesday from 10.30am – 12pm
(Dancing from 10.30am-11.30am followed by tea, coffee, biscuits and a chance to socialise)

Roots of Rumba is coming to Trinity on July the 6th! The Afro-Latin dance festival, curated by fomer IGNiTE artist in resident Ella Mesma features shows that stand for representing the diversity of dances of the African Diaspora.

The line-up includes performances by Sandra Passirani, Latisha Cesar, RJC, Franck Arnaud-Lusbec, Iris de Brito and Myriam Gadri. In “Mine Or Theirs”, Sandra Passirani reflects on her own identity and body as a queer woman of colour. The performance invites the audience to realise how social constructs smother and bend the beauty and sacredness of womanhood.

Franck Arnaud-Lusbec’s “Di-Osmosis” celebrates his Martiniquan roots and how these have shaped and still shape who he is today. Through his performance, he explores how his origins harmoniously blend with his eagerness to discover other cultures to form a perfect osmosis. “Uprooting”, performed by Iris De Brito, is a work in progress centred around the family bonds severed through migration and immigration. The show sheds light on how forced movement creates new identities and trauma that reflect through generations.

Myriam Gadri’s dance piece “The Lost Goddess” depicts the unexpected awakening of the Lady of the River, after a hundred years of ceremonial attempts to break her sleep, Further unexpected events follow and lead two women to eventually discover they are stronger and more in tune with the elements when they coexist.

Clay, Stained Glass and Woodcarving workshops

Do you want to learn some of the craft skills that built Trinity? Would you like to have your work permanently displayed in Trinity? Would you like to make new friends from different walks of life? We are offering a new block of free workshops in Clay, Stained Glass and Woodcarving on Tuesdays between 3 Apr to 22 May.

Everyone is welcome to take part but older people, members of Bristol's BME communities and residents of BS5 & BS2 are particularly welcomed.

Please note these are NOT drop-in or taster sessions. You will get the most benefit from your workshop if you are able to complete all the sessions. All the workshops are delivered on the same day and time, so please select and commit to your preference in advance.

About the project

Heart and Soul: Trinity in the Community is a celebration of big life events at Trinity. Throughout 2018 there will workshops, talks and heritage activities for all ages. The project runs along side our most recent capital works and has been made possible with the help of these funders.

From tapestry to pews, to the ornate floor and ceiling tiles - woodcarving, clay, textiles and stained glass all highly featured both inside and outside the Holy Trinity Church (now the Trinity Centre) when it opened in 1832. Whilst many of these features are no longer with us, you can still see the remains of the artisan crafted features if you look up in the Fyfe Hall or, walk past the beautiful stained glass windows. As part of our Heart & Soul project, we want to give residents the opportunity to find out more about the heritage of Trinity, through learning the traditional crafts and skills used in building the centre.

Our first block of workshops started on Saturday 10 Feb, delivered by stained glass artist Liz Barton, ceramicist Joanna Espiner, textile artist Ruth Ramsey and woodcarver Daniel Bendel. They will be working with participants, across two blocks of workshops, to create collaborative artwork to display across Trinity.

In these initial workshops participants explored Trinity’s features, looking at how the crafts were originally used across the building. Using this as inspiration, participants spent the morning designing their artwork and the afternoon learning the basics of the traditional crafts.

What a pleasure it was to meet and work with the new elders group in Bristol. Our work together comprised of sensory exercises, partner work and an exploration to our own relationships to dance. I think you would have to ask the participants how it was for them, but from what I saw there was something like a real curiosity about sensation and presence, inhabited bodies, thinking bodies, a hyper awareness and yet a directness, an honesty of approach and a committed attention. When they move it’s like the moment is now, capturing a moment, an appreciation of time allocated to dancing. All of this together creates such a nuanced beauty, not a young dancer hiding behind layers of doubt or various facades but a presence that knows its own power of self.

I was invited by Trinity to lead this session, you never know how this is going to go with a new group, different expectations, different abilities and experiences. I work with all kind of people and of course each group is different. In these last years working with 3 different elders groups both in Wales and Manchester. I love it. These groups have much to give and express. Of late, I have seen a fair few performance projects with older performers and often I’m afraid to say, the choreographers are getting it wrong. For me, the works are rife with misrepresentation and misinterpretation, it actually makes me really angry to see performers compromised. At some point I would like to embark on a choreography that is for older performers. Having more experiences with different groups contributes towards ideas and its true to say I’m inspired - but I would like get it right, pitch the right kind of work that says the right thing.

I am 45 years old - I like to think I could find ways to access a truth to a new work, even though the performers have several years more life experience. Find the right essence, the subject matter or frame of a work that allows performers to be free within that frame. I will think more on it.

Paradise City

Over ten days IGNiTE summer residents Back in 5 Minutes Squad and Art in Motion will be creating an evolving installation up in our Fyfle Hall.

This is super exciting as Spike Island Residents  - Back in 5 Minutes Squad and emerging not-for-profit participatory arts organisation Art in Motion (AIM) will be collaborating for the first time for this project.

Evolving over the ten days of the residency these two diverse groups will collaborate to portray their vision of an ideal, egalitarian future in which humans of all types and abilities coexist peacefully and purposefully together - the fabric of this future city will reflect the diverse and idiosyncratic interests of all the artists involved.

From Monday 19 the artists invite you to visit during this exciting process and Paradise City will be open to everyone for a celebration event from 5-7pm in the Graffiti Room at Trinity on Thursday 29 June.
