Black History Month at Trinity

October is Black History Month and here at Trinity we have a fantastic line-up of events.

The first half of month sees a wonderful mix of theatre and reminiscence. First up is 'A Brush With Immortality – Henrietta Lacks', a documentary and exhibition by Helen Wilson-Roe, making visible the image of a woman who unknowingly had an incredible impact on medical history. The screening takes place on 10th October, and you will have an entire week in which to visit the exhibition. The following day is 'Scenes, Soundsystems and Shebeens', an exploration into the music and legendary venues of Bristol's African Caribbean scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Featuring guest speakers, live music and delicious food, come a long and share your memories of an extraordinary era. And on 16th October, stories of seduction, love and lust come to Trinity's stage. For one night only, performance artist and poet Isadora Vibes will explore the powerful themes of emotional, physical and psychological abuse in her mixed-media poetic performance 'The Ultimate Seduction'. Following on directly as part of a double-bill, poet, performer and playwright Chanje Kunda will answer the question of 'what happens when you abandon your responsibilities to chase your dreams?' in her play 'Amsterdam'.

And the drama continues! 'Tangled Roots', a spoken word performance exploring the untold story of the UK's mixed-race population, will be preceded by a life-writing workshop – your writing will become part of the story that evening! Join in on 19th October. Alternatively, on 24th October, take a journey through the dub-driven rhythm of the universe via film, spoken-word and music with 'Reggae Inna Space'. Presented as part of the Sci-fi Afrofuturism Season, in partnership with Watershed and Film Hub South West & West Midlands.

Tomorrow's Warriors, a jazz collective that has helped to kickstart the careers of some of the most talked about jazz artists in the UK, will be holding a jazz jam taster session on 26th October, 'Tomorrow's Warriors Connexions' Bring your instrument for this practical workshop!

Finally, on 28th October, we have seventh instalment in the brilliant 'Vice & Virtue' series, which has been revealing the hidden history of Old Market. 'Black GIs in Britain' will discuss the impact of US racial politics on wartime Britain.

Conscious Frontiers presents The pioneering Spiritual Ecology conference

Join the New Consciousness Revolution!
Conscious Frontiers presents Future NOW, a one-day conference and charity fundraiser organised by Will Gethin and Joe Hoare at the Trinity Centre, Bristol, on Saturday 8th November. This event explores urgent solutions and mindful steps we need to take to sustain the Earth so we can secure bright, happy and sustainable lives for our children and grandchildren.

Featuring groundbreaking presentations, powerful performances and interactive breakout sessions with leading eco and spiritual pioneers Satish Kumar, Peter Owen Jones, Tim Freke, Chloe Goodchild and Joe Hoare – interspersed with sacred sounds and chants - Future NOW calls for an Inner Revolution.

It’s a call to become more mindful, more peaceful, more connected and more loving to ourselves, to each other and to the Earth. It urges us to change our “Descartes” inherited philosophical perspective of ourselves as separate from each other and the Earth and embrace our interconnectedness. It calls for us to grow beyond the selfish drives of our materialistic society and create a new way – moving from self interest to mutual interest, reciprocity and interdependence.

Throughout the day, conference participants are invited to explore how we can each make a difference and take urgent action to be the change in our daily lives. The breakout discussion sessions continuously echo and reflect on the question, “What am I going to do differently?”

Future NOW is an invitation to have a voice, to help shape our collective future and to take an active role in propagating the New Consciousness Revolution.

10 very earlybird tickets are now available starting at £30, till 21st August, rising to £55.

Exhibition and screening of documentary by local artist Helen Wilson-Roe. Live music spoken word and Q&A

Artist Helen Wilson-Roe’s portrait paintings highlight the forgotten histories of their subjects. For 17 years artist Helen Wilson-Roe has been researching the life of Henrietta Lacks. In 2010 she began collaborating with the Lacks family to make visible the image of a woman who unknowingly had an incredible impact on medical history.

Henrietta Lacks was a young African-American mother from Baltimore who died in 1951 of unusually aggressive cervical cancer. Henrietta is remarkable because a sample of her cancer cells became the first cells to survive and multiply outside the human body, forming an ‘immortal’ cell line known as HeLa.

HeLa have been grown in laboratories around the world and millions of people have benefitted medically from the advances they enabled. Research using HeLa cells has led to some of the most important developments in medical history including the Polio vaccine, cloning and gene sequencing.

Working closely with Bristol scientists Professor Craig McArdle, Professor Jon Lane and Professor Harry Mellor, Helen Wilson-Roe has had unique access to the HeLa cells in the laboratory environment. Her project invites us to consider questions around permission, recognition and the role of the individual in large scientific projects.

Through her portraits of the Lacks family and the documentary Helen Wilson-Roe aims to bring their story to the fore and to make Henrietta’s image and her family’s pride at her legacy, visible beyond the scientific research community. Helen has gifted the Lacks family portraits, and copyright to the Lacks family.

Jeri Lacks Whye, Henrietta Lacks granddaughter, says, “Thanks again Helen. We will finally have a very special piece that we, as Henrietta's descendants, can say we own (copyright). I'm so excited - overfilled with joy and proud. Words can't describe how I felt when I saw the wonderful portrait you have painted of Henrietta Lacks.

The display on Henrietta Lacks will run from 10th October till October 17th 2014 in Trinity’s upstairs gallery and is suitable for all ages. Access 9am - 5pm daily

Free life-writing workshop and performance with Dr Katy Massey - part of our Black History Month programme

On Sunday 19 October, Tangled Roots are staging a live workshop and performance event at The Trinity Centre. The event is in two parts: a free life-writing workshop in the afternoon led by Dr Katy Massey PhD will then be followed by a live performance staged by the Tangled Roots writers and actors.

Workshop attendees will also have the opportunity to hear their own life experiences dramatised on stage as some of the life-writing produced in the workshop will be adapted by the team becoming part of the live performance.

In addition, attendees can browse an exhibition of photographic portraits of mixed race writers, specially commissioned by Tangled Roots.

Bristol-based poet Katie Grant is a high-profile supporter of the Tangled Roots project. She is part of a mixed race family herself and, last year, presented a documentary ‘The Brown Camp’ about mixed families on Radio 4. “I am thrilled to be representing the Tangled Roots Project in the South West. The history and experiences of mixed race families has a direct relevance and resonance in my life - both as a writer and as a mother” says Grant. “The photographs commissioned by Tangled Roots really reflect the nature of this diverse new population.”

“Bristol's history at the centre of the UK slave trade is well-known, what isn't so well documented is the huge mixed population who call Bristol 'home'. 16% of our city's population* belongs to a black or minority ethnic group, but among under 15s the figure is 28%*. Rising numbers of people are forming relationships across different racial and ethnic groups. As a result, more families than ever before comprise of more than one race. These families - families like mine, in fact - never see their stories represented in the mainstream media. It is the experiences of mixed families in Bristol and the South West that the Tangled Roots project wants to highlight” Grant explained.

Workshop & Performance information

The writing workshop (2pm-5pm) is open to adults who wish to learn how to write about their own life experiences or anyone else's. You do NOT have to be mixed race to attend! The workshop theme will be “Home” and you must book your place in advance.

The evening performance (7pm- 8pm) is open to young people and adults (please note the performance is not suitable for under 12s). It is free and lasts approximately one hour.

To book your place on the workshop or to attend the performance please call Trinity on 0117 935 1200 or email: info@3ca.org.uk
