In any relationship, difference is the dynamic that makes magic happen. In musical partnerships, it’s often the crucial friction that makes creative sparks fly but, a fraction too much friction, and everything’s likely to go up in smoke.

Lou Rhodes and Andy Barlow understand difference more than most. They’re the first to admit that when they got together their diametrically opposing aesthetics – Lou’s devotion to The Song, Andy’s obsession with all things beats-driven and electronic and his complete disinterest in vocals – created problems. Often, the very glue that bound them together nearly saw them come unstuck. But those differences also bred a mutual respect and resulted in one of the most genuinely genre-bending dance albums of the mid-90s. In 1996, when drum’n’bass ruled, Lamb’s eponymous debut LP up-ended the rigid idea of that form by warming its distinctively chilly, tacheometric chatter with injections of jazz, classical, blues, techno and hip hop and giving it an intensely personal, highly emotional charge. The sweetly stuttering ‘Cottonwool’ and divine ‘Gorecki’ singles showed that drum’n’bass could do much more than just make feet move quicker – it could make hearts beat faster, too.

Garden Party line up announced, Sunday 14 May

We are well excited to be announcing the bands and artists joining us for this years Garden Party

Last year's event will be a hard one to top – as we were blessed with glorious sunshine all day and a lovely crowd that joined us from dawn to dusk. However, you’ll be happy to hear that this year it is going to be even better [sadly we cannot guarantee the weather though, just the experience]. This year we’ve a delightful line up ranging from soul to- jaz to hip-hop to dub.

Headlining this year is Dubkasm (aka DJ Stryda & Digistep), who we have worked closely with over the years so it’s pretty special to be programming them to play on the Garden Party stage. This is a headline slot filled with live instrumentation and lo-tech dubwise textures, underpinned by a strong roots vibe. It is going to be smashing.

Across the rest of the day we’ll be filling the line up with a mix of artists from Bristol. We are starting the day with young people from our in house music course, everything from solo singer-song-writer to hip hop and beyond.

Sounds Of Harlowe bring live hip-hop/ soul to the line up this year and Sepia, will grace the Trinity stage for the first time with his forward thinking beats and rattling bass. Run Logan Run bring a sax and drums jazz outfit with added noise and expect jazzy wonky-pop from Toddler, fronted by Stevie-Jo Dooley. There’s afrobeat, soundscapes and improvisation from instrumental group Tezeta or for those of you who like something a little different we’ve got minimal / hypnotist-un-rock from Motes.

We have a couple more acts to announce (exciting stuff) plus workshops and family activities to add to the bill. Full info coming soon.

Smerin's are back with a new album. Yes that's right... a NEW ALBUM!!! 'Jelly Deals' is due for release in late April and to celebrate the occasion we've lined up a massive launch party at Bristol's Trinity Centre on Friday 12th May.
For the uninitiated, Smerin's Anti-Social Club have been firing up festival crowds and gig-goers across the land for the past 15 years with their inimitable blend of brass-heavy funk, swing, rock, drum ‘n’ bass, and ska. Although they’ve made ripples on the radio with releases such as their infamous dub rendition of the Doctor Who theme featuring killer vocals of the late great Tenor Fly, and thrilled fans with the willfully schizophonic self-released Primordial Cordial LP, it’s their enviable reputation as a live act that has long been winning this 8-piece band appearances at the country’s top festivals.

The Carny Villains

We're honoured to have our friends and sure-fire party starters The Carny Villains join us on the lineup. They've gone from strength to strength since they took Bristol by storm at the Invisible Circus's legendary Carny Ville events, and we can't wait to see what they been up to in the studio over the Winter months.

Known for their raucous blend of stomping swing, ska and Balkan-style folk played with the riotous energy of punk rock, The Carny Villains enigmatic and animated live shows are are always something to behold, punctuated by off the wal theatrics, humour and showmanship.

Dj Dad

Bristol's one and only DJ Dad will keep things flowing with his seemingly endless collection of great tunes.
