SOLO Showcase

SOLO showcase presents 4 premieres of new Contemporary Performance from Bristol-based artists

SOLO showcase

Summon the ancestors with Alice Human; spot a rabbit in the headlights with Ale Marzotto; challenge your audience etiquette with Bella Fortune and relish in an angry outburst as Hannah
Sullivan explodes Jo Hellier completes the bill with her flood inspired sound installation.

Thursday 19th:

Rabbit
Performance by Alessandro Marzotto Levy

Fear and the unknown can be paralysing. Can we let such fears escape our minds and bodies?

Rabbit revolves around the several lies that we create in order to protect ourselves.

Is it possible to take risks in life without becoming paralysed by the fear of being judged by others, but firstly by ourselves.

With Force and Noise
Performance by Hannah Sullivan

When was the last time you got angry?

With Force and Noise is Hannah’s first attempt at articulating anger. It is an experiment in costume and words: autobiography and fiction, blurred bodies and unsung bells. It starts with the colour red.

Friday 20th:

Bubbletiquette
Performance by Bella Fortune

Bubbletiquette is an autobiographically driven show that examines acts of fidgeting and social etiquette. Fidgeting as a form of communication can be tricky to translate. Are we enforcing focus or driving ourselves to distraction? what, if anything, are our bodies trying to say and should we be paying more attention?

Tea with your ancestors
Performance by Alice Human

A poetic and surreal sonic performance dedicated to our ancestors.

Alice explores the interaction between the live and the recorded, the present and the past, being born and dying. To understand how we can capture the qualities of what was, and what does spirituality mean for us now?

Thursday 19th & Friday 20th:

Flood Plans
Installation by Jo Hellier

When rivers join together their streams combine to make something stronger. That, or they burst their banks, flood and destroy.

This installation is the second incarnation of Flood Plans; the first took the form of a performance that premiered at IBT15. Through the creation of this installation Jo hopes to further explore, through sound and video, research that she implemented in collaboration with musician Yas Clarke.

Dramaturgy from Alice Tatton-Brown

Supported by Arts Council England, Interval, Bristol Ferment, In Between Time and Battersea Arts Centre.

#discover #SOLOforum

Tickets
£10 / conc £8 per show

A fate defying triple bill from Julia Thorneycroft Dance, 'Get Lucky' squares up to unluckiest day of the month with a cabaret style evening of daring dance theatre.

'Frustra' - Through humour, striking imagery and powerful intricate movement a story unravels between a man and a woman. Competition builds, passion increases and the dancers' blood boils as they attempt to out do each other in a fast paced ‘pas de deux’. An Argentine tango…..perhaps.

'Breath:Taking' - A thoughtful duet exploring grief, 'Breath:Taking' was created in tribute to Julia's nephew Conrad, killed whilst serving in Afghanistan. Using Mike York's visual arts work 'Empty Chairs' as it's impetus, this piece explores the space left behind by those we have lost.

'Endeavour' - Exploring our love/hate relationship with reality TV competitions 'Endeavour' takes a satirical swipe at shows such as Crufts and Great British Menu. Giving a humorous nod to a range of dance styles and a light hearted look at the evolution of human kind.

“I would like to thank Julia for bringing passion, humour, fun and above all audience engagement.” Deryk Newland, Pavilion Dance South West

Have a drink on us! Each ticket purchased entitles you to one free glass of wine on entry.

It was the conflict of a generation and one that many people will never forget. On the 2nd of April 1982 Argentina invaded the Falklands Islands with the aim of recapturing them through a claim that they had inherited the islands from Spain in the 1800's.

The Islands, which had been in control of Great Britain for nearly 150 years, became a battle ground and the UK Government were quick to defend both the Islands and it's inhabitants. What was to follow saw 655 Argentine Soldiers and 255 British Serviceman slain.

Amongst those who were sent to the conflict was Simon Weston OBE.

In one of the most horrific moments of the conflict the HMS Sir Galahad was bombed by two Argentine planes, aboard at the time was Simon. This was a event which would change his life forever. Eventually, and against the odds, Simon escaped the burning and buckled ship, but only after suffering 46% burns to his body. Today he has become one of the most recognised faces of the conflict and for the first time ever Simon is taking to the stage to tell his no holds barred story.

Guiding him from that fateful day to current times is David Fitzgerald. Former Sky News Anchor and close Friend. There will be highs and lows, and questions that only David can ask, with answers only Simon can give, but the shocking truth of the conflict, that day, and the years that followed will be shared.

The show, created and produced by Devon Based BIB Productions LTD is continuing its preview tour by visiting Bristol’s very own Trinity Centre on Sunday 18th January.

Tickets start from £14.50 with special rates available for services personnel, students and over 60’s and are available on line or in person from Bristol Ticket Shop.

Simon Weston; My Life, My Story is a truly inspirational show about one man's journey from the front line of war, being on the edge of death, to today being a happy and contented Father, Grandfather and national treasure.

A live performance premiere of Jonny Velon's debut album

Jonny Velón is an English singer and songwriter. Growing up as an aspiring musician, classically trained as a boy, with a music obsessed father and grandfather; he was immersed in a huge variety of musical tastes; from Wagner operas and Russian ballets to African dance and touring circuses. Ten years of song writing now and the debut album is in the can (recorded at Toybox Studios in Bristol). It’s distinctive: he has a unique style, blending classic rock and pop with mystic wonder. Velón has a story to tell and clearly a theatrical show beckons.

On January 17th, at the Trinity Fyfe Hall, Bristol, Jonny Velón's debut album will be performed in full - an extravaganza rock-magic/art-pop show. All 20 of the local musicians performing, helped record the album - the 'big band' includes horns, strings and the Velón rock quartet. Dancers have been promised. Velón has ambitions to make it big. Proud to be in Bristol and keen to be at the forefront of new music of the highest quality, this is a show he wants people to remember. The debut single from Jonny Velón, ‘The Cambridge Squeeze,’ is out in January, available as a digital download. The album will be released later next year.
