Folk, the soul of blues, and the rebellious spirit of punk

The Devil Makes Three has always thrived in the spaces between genres, where the grit of folk, the soul of blues, and the rebellious spirit of punk collide.

Their music doesn’t just follow the American storytelling tradition—it redefines it. Whether evoking the deep melancholy of Delta blues or the frenetic energy of punk, their sound is raw, powerful, and unmistakably their own. For over two decades, this genre-defying trio has carved out a place in the American roots scene, delivering high-energy performances that leave audiences captivated and wanting more. They've released seven studio albums and three live recordings, with their latest, Spirits, marking a return to their stripped-down roots.

As part of this years celebrations of Black History Month we invited creatives and activists in the West of England to respond to the theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ through the lens of Citizens For Culture’s core principles: inclusion, voice and influence In the final piece as part of the series creative producer, facilitator and DJ Josephine Gyasi shares her poem: What Are Your Plans?

Josephine Gyasi: Reclaiming Narritives

Like so many, I was once again heartbroken and deeply shaken by the killing of an innocent Black person. In a dark period of isolation, shock, and deep reflection, I wrote these words to confront the enduring evils of inequality and police brutality — injustices embedded in the very systems that still structure our society today. This piece poses a clear message and a question to every non-Black person on the planet, especially those with the greatest power and privilege.

Murmuration Choir: Sound Bath Concert -SOLD OUT-

Immersive, surround-sound choral journey + midwinter restoration

Murmuration Choir will share a 1 hour mid-winter sound bath concert, directed by vocal yoga teacher Isolde Lachlan, with live gong from music therapist Sula Deane.

This is an opportunity to take a break from the holiday chaos and immerse yourself in the healing sound of vocal harmony, poetry and guided meditation, interwoven with soundscapes, asmr, theruptic instruments, and re-imagined contemporary choral pieces that explore belonging, love, nature connection, rest and dreaming.

You do not need to do anything but lie down on a yoga mat and be physically surrounded by a warm cocoon of 70 voices, with ambient projections from Gavin Brokis.

Participants will be led through gentle, accessible movements to allow you to settle fully in and out of relaxation, and there will be the opportunity to join us in simple sound making to reawaken you back into a refreshed state, ready to face the demands of the holiday season.

What to Bring: This is a lying-down event. Wear something comfortable, and bring extra layers + softness to keep you warm and cosy. Yoga mats are provided, but please feel free to bring an additional mat for extra comfort.

What is a ‘sound bath’?A ‘sound bath’ is a term used in the world of sound healing to describe the experience of being surrounded by beautiful, calming, therapeutic sounds, usually with the recipient lying down and passively receiving. The specific intention from the sound practitioner is to encourage relaxation in the recipient’s nervous system, and to generate release from physical, mental and emotional tension in the body, which promotes healthy cell rejuvenation and a sense of increased wellbeing.

3 x Sound Bath Timings: Sound Bath 1 - 5.30 - 6.30 pm * Sound Bath 2 - 7 - 8 pm * Sound Bath 3 - 8.30 - 9.30 pm
You can find out more about the choir via our website (murmurationchoir.co.uk) and / or follow us on instagram or facebook @murmurchoir.

N.B.: We are not able to admit attendees arriving after the start time. Please arrive 15 minutes before your time, and leave 15 minutes after.

This event will be photographed, and by taking part you are agreeing to having your image used, for our sound bath promotion purposes only.
Children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult, and able to remain quiet / still for the duration.
