The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution

A film by Director Stanley Nelson

Change was coming to America and the fault lines could no longer be ignored—cities were burning, Vietnam was exploding, and disputes raged over equality and civil rights. A new revolutionary culture was emerging and it sought to drastically transform the system.

The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense would, for a short time, put itself at the vanguard of that change. THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver, Jamal Joseph, and many others, THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that birthed a new revolutionary culture in America.

3 1⁄2 Minutes: Ten Bullets

A Film by Marc Silver

In 3 1⁄2 Minutes, two lives intersected and were forever altered. On Black Friday in 2012, two cars parked next to each other at a Florida gas station. A white middle-aged male and a black teenager exchanged angry words over the volume of the music in the boy’s car. A gun entered the exchange, and one of them was left dead.

Michael Dunn fired 10 bullets at a car full of unarmed teenagers and then fled. Three of those bullets hit 17-year-old Jordan Davis, who died at the scene. Arrested the next day, Dunn claimed he shot in self-defence. Thus began the long journey of un-ravelling the truth. 3 1⁄2 Minutes follows that journey, reconstructing the night of the murder and revealing how hidden racial prejudice can result in tragedy.

Directed by Marc Silver (Who is Dayani Cristal?), the documentary intercuts powerful exclusive footage from a riveting trial with intimate, observational scenes of Jordan’s parents, Ron and Lucy. We see first hand how difficult it is for them to grapple with unimaginable loss while fighting for justice for their son. The film integrates police interrogation footage, prison phone recordings and interviews with the others at the scene that night. The result is a powerful story about the devastating effects of racial bias, and the search for justice within the judicial system.

About Uchenna Dance

The Company

Uchenna Dance is based in London, UK. It was formed in January 2009 under the vision and leadership of Vicki Igbokwe, shortly after she experienced a life-changing trip to New York during the summer of 2008. It was a Wednesday evening and Vicki had just finished taking a house dance class at Peridance Studios and had been told about a club called Sin Sin, that had a house night called Soulgasam. It hit her that this dance she was falling in love with, house dance, was much more than just a style of dance, it was a culture, a way of life. The DJ was spinning some tunes and the dancers were killing it…

The Uchenna dance style fuses Waacking, Vogue and House with traditional African and Contemporary, creating a signatory aesthetic that simply is, Uchenna.

Uchenna (pronounced OO-CHENNA) offers a unique and contemporary addition to the UK dance scene.

Since its inception, Uchenna Dance has grown from an informal explorative company to a tour de force within the dance sector.

The company’s overarching aim is to Empower, Entertain and Educate through dance in a diverse programme that includes the production of dance theatre production experiences, coaching, dance based empowerment workshops and teaching in further and higher education.

They have already completed a string of dates across Europe supporting Wolf Alice, embarked on their own sold out headline UK tour and joined Nothing But Thieves on their April tour. ‘Loveblood’ is sure to be the next step in what is shaping up to be an incredible year for the Reading four-piece, whose eagerly anticipated debut album will be released later in 2016.

Talking about ‘Loveblood’, frontman Oscar Lulu says: “The song is about fate, love and tragedy. A kind of Romeo and Juliet inspired thing. It’s also inspired by Oscar Wilde’s short story ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime’. Mysteries of the unexplained is something that has a huge appeal for me.”

The PE Class is an ongoing series of workshops exploring the essentials of ensemble theatre practice. They are a space for theatre-makers to experiment, to practice, to share ideas, and to meet.

Each session will be led by a different Bristol-based Director who is asked to try something new, to facilitate an extended practical exercise for the duration of the session.

This season’s facilitators:

Tue 24 May – George Mann (Theatre Ad Infinitum)
Tue 31 May – Laura Dannequin (lauradannequin.co.uk)
Tue 7 June – Helena Middleton and Tom Brennan (The Wardrobe Ensemble)
Tue 14 June – Lucinka Eisler (Inspector Sands)

Basic Info

Every Tuesday evening, 24 May – 14 June
6.30pm – 9.30pm (doors open at 6.15pm)
Trinity Centre, Bristol, BS2 0NW
£7.50 per session (or £25 if all four booked in advance)

What will I get out of the classes?

As well as getting to develop skills and try out new approaches, learning from some of the best practitioners making work right now, PE Classes are a great way to meet other local theatre-makers, and to introduce yourself to a range of Directors developing work in Bristol and beyond.

Are the classes right for me?

PE Classes are aimed at active theatre-makers who want to collaborate to tell stories for their audience. They are peer led sessions, pitched at fellow practitioners who work professionally in the theatre, or who aspire to.

Actors, dancers, clowns and circus artists… performers from any discipline are all welcome, as are teachers/workshop leaders and current theatre/performing arts students (HE and 18+ only).

Other Directors are particularly encouraged to attend as participants. Award-winning acting talent is not required, only openness, generosity, and an ability to support the groups’ improvisation and play.

Nuts and bolts

Places are limited and class size capped. Please note that you cannot pay on the door so places must be booked in advance, and that Trinity Arts do not sell tickets for these workshops. Tickets can be purchased online, over the phone or in person at Tobacco Factory Theatres up until 4pm latest on the day of each session. As long as you’ve paid-up by then, no need to bring paper-ticket with you to Trinity Centre.

PE Classes take place in Fyfe Hall, upstairs at Trinity Centre. Doors open at 6.15pm for informal chat, finishing coffee, wandering in, stretching if you want. Class starts 6.30 sharp.

Please wear loose comfortable clothing. Bring appropriate soft indoor footwear or be prepared to work bare foot.

Learn more about—and TAKE ACTION AGAINST—Bristol’s celebration of enslavement and Bristol’s whitewashing of history! Bristol, in both its public art and museums, still celebrates the legacy of eurocentric enslavement of African persons. This ugly celebration runs alongside Bristol’s gross social and economic oppression of its communities of African descent—alongside poor representations of, and poor engagement with, African history, African heritage, and African people, in Bristol’s public museums and galleries, in Bristol’s public squares and streets. These public spaces are owned by us—citizens who contribute to society in various ways, including by paying taxes. These public spaces are funded in our name, to serve our communities and our children.

This interactive workshop will include short film screenings, collective debate, and a sharing of resources and action-based toolkits. If you would like to learn more about repairing how we are portrayed in our public spaces, and if you’d like to take collective action to repair how we are portrayed in our public spaces, then please join us, on Friday 10th June, between 2 and 5pm, in Bristol’s Trinity Centre. The session is open to all, but we explicitly and unapologetically extend a special invitation to Bristol’s communities of African descent and to people who do not usually engage with museums. This is your opportunity to make your voice heard, listened to, and put into action.

The session will be led by Dr Nathaniel Adam Tobias Coleman a scholar-activist from Birmingham, where he works closely with the Black Studies Research Cluster at Birmingham City University’s Centre for Critical Social Research, and Isabelle Cox, a scholar-activist and mother from Manchester, who is passionate about children, young people, and Black liberation.
