The Mountain Goats + The Weather Station

Indie rock band hailing from Claremont, California, U.S

The Mountain Goats

+ The Weather Station

The Mountain Goats formed in 1991. Led by singer, songwriter and the man regarded as the best lyricist in American rock John Darnielle, they have released 15 studio albums since their debut effort in 1994.

John Darnielle was born on March 16th, 1967 in Bloomington, Indiana. At the age of two he lost his birth father, leading him and his mother to relocate to Central California where he grew up with a physically and emotionally abusive step-father. To cope with it he retreated into music and writing in a big way, but found that once high school was over, he couldn’t bring himself to stay in his hometown any longer. He found a job as a psychiatric nurse at the Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California and began writing songs on the guitar when he wasn’t working. He started performing live around 1990, and made a valuable friend in the form of Dennis Callaci.

Callaci was the owner of Shrimper Records, and after Darnielle gave him a boombox recorded demo tape of some of his early songs, Callaci released it as Darnielle’s first album “Taboo IV: The Homecoming”. Unwilling to perform under his own name, Darnielle took the moniker The Mountain Goats from the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins song “Yellow Coat” and began to tour with only himself on guitar and his friend Rachel Ware on the bass guitar. In 1991, Darnielle started attending the Pitzeer College in Claremont to study for an English degree, and it was during this time that he started properly focusing on songwriting, becoming renowned for his massively prolific output of songs.

Between 1991 and 1995 he released a large number of cassette’s and seven inch vinyl’s and built up a devoted following because of it. However, once he left college he decided to take his band more seriously and make a go of starting an actual career in music. His debut album proper, “Zopilote Machine”, had been released in 1994, and he spent the rest of the 1990’s building his following into a proper, nationwide fan-base. While the group have never been commercially succesful, they remain one of the most critically acclaimed and respected acts in American indie rock. Darnielle remains as prolific as ever, and has grown into a truly captivating live act to boot. The Mountain Goats are a band to see as soon as possible, and they come highly recommended.

The team at Colston Hall bring Ariel Pink the king of pop perversion to Trinity Centre. Across its 17 tracks and 69 minutes, new album pom pom is unfiltered Ariel: a Pied Piper of the absurd, with infectious tales of romance, murder, frog princes and Jell-O. The record sees the Los Angeles native strike it out alone, returning to the solo moniker he has adopted for well over a decade – and this could well be his magnum opus.

Los Angeles-based one-man band and pied-piper of the absurd Ariel Pink’s lo-fi, Baroque music was first discovered by indie group Animal Collective, who began releasing volumes of Ariel Pink home recordings on their Paw Tracks label. 2004’s ‘The Doldrums’ came first, and gained Pink both critical acclaim and a cult following.

Having formed the band Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti in order to bring his recordings to life, he signed with indie label 4AD late in 2009, and the next year released his highest-selling record to date, ‘Before Today’. His 2014 release, ‘Pom Pom’, saw Pink return to his solo moniker, and features songs written with 60s novelty record producer and musician, Kim Fowley.

Ariel Pink began songwriting at the age of ten, with early influences deriving from pop acts such as Hall & Oates, Michael Jackson, 10cc, Fleetwood Mac, and David Bowie. After a stint studying visual art at the California Institute of the Arts,Pink switched his artistic focus to songcraft for good.

Far skilled beyond his years, Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt is arguably the main reason the group was catapulted to global demand back in 2010. With impeccable wordplay, dense rhythms and effortless melodies layered in humbling texture, it's crazy to think Earl Sweatshirt has just turned 21. On his Chum LP, the OFWGKTA trophy piece displays grade-A lyricism in brilliantly dark fashion that you'd only associate with hip-hop's elite.
Winner of ‘Best Metropolitan Festival’ at UK Festival Awards 2013
'Dot to Dot offers a unique experience for festival-goers and artists alike’ – efestivals
‘With a stunning bill and venues within yards of one another we’ll leave you to join the dots’ - Clash

Dot To Dot Festival is established as the UKs premier festival for unearthing the hottest new talent around, alongside established acts from all over the globe. 2015 marks the festival’s 10th year and will see it returning to Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham from the 22nd to 24th May. Dot To Dot’s ever eclectic line-up is set to make this landmark year the biggest and best in the festival’s history.

With lots of exciting announcements to follow, this is just the first wave of artists to play this year’s Festival:

Following a stand out set at last year’s festival, headlining this year’s festival will be Saint Raymond, Nottingham’s latest success story. It’s been an incredible year for the singer-songwriter, which has seen him embark on an arena tour with Ed Sheeran as well as a take on a sell-out headline tour of his own. Twenty-one year old Rae Morris also joins the festival in Manchester and Nottingham following a sold out UK tour and top 10 critically acclaimed album “Unguarded’. Irish pop folk duo Hudson Taylor, comprising of brothers Harry and Alfie join the bill, along with The Wytches who bring their blend of critically acclaimed surf-psych to the festival. Also joining Dot To Dot 2015 are Canadian punk-rock band Single Mothers and New York based indie-rockers, Cymbals Eat Guitars.

Glaswegian duo Honeyblood bring their brand of grunge-pop to the festival alongside the folk infused Haim-esque harmonies from Australian trio Little May and Hinds (formerly known as Deers), the garage rock up and comers from Madrid. Laura Doggett (whose music you may recognise from ITV Series Broadchurch) will also perform with her distinctive soulful sound along with the hotly tipped pop fuzz of Menace Beach. Further along the line up, Dot To Dot fans can expect to hear sensual R&B pop courtesy of Brooklyn based singer Tei Shi, atmospheric indie sounds from Racing Glaciers and 4-piece Welsh rock band Pretty Vicious who’ll perform their angsty anthems at the Bristol and Nottingham dates. The full line-up also features Alex Burey’s tenderly emotional pop music, the ‘80s infused electro pop of April Towers and the playful bohemian indie tunes of Vitamin as well as many, many more incredible acts yet to be announced!

Dot To Dot Organiser Anton Lockwood (of DHP Family) said: ‘We’re very excited to be celebrating our 10th birthday here at Dot To Dot and can’t wait to bring the festival back to Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham! We’re proud of the reputation we’ve developed over the last 10 years for promoting new, up and coming talent by giving artists their first chance in front of a festival crowd, and this year’s line-up is no different. Having seen so many previous Dot To Dot artists become huge successes in recent years
we can’t wait to watch some of the emerging talent that the music scene has to offer at this year’s festival. This announcement is only the start of it!’

Previous Dot to Dot line-ups have seen performances from The xx, Mumford and Sons, The 1975, London Grammar, Jake Bugg, SBTKRT, The Cribs, Peace and many, many more. With the emphasis on showcasing the hottest new talent on the planet, there will be lots more exciting additions to be announced for Dot To Dot’s 2015 line-up.

Kassia Zermon aka 'Bunty' is a unique force best known for pioneering underground experimental vocal loop shows and fronting UK leading Dub act Resonators. Bunty's distinctive voice and powerful avant-pop orchestra has been compared to FKA Twiggs and Tune-Yards and championed by likes of Rodigan, Mark Lamar and BBC6 taste makers Tom Robinson and Lauren Laverne.

She combines the rawness of early M.I.A with the lyrical espionage of Tom Waits and a voice that can sound as sweet as Ella Fitzgerald (on Acid).

To celebrate the launch of Bunty's new album 'Multimos' (11/14 Beatabet records), she has created a brand new ensemble and dazzling AV live show, which she will be presenting LIVE at Trinity.
Complete with its own home-made light show, special FX and a lot of helium to suck you into a raucous avant - pop party!

Hard to fit into any box this lady's influences are huge, bringing her Morrocan Londoner roots to create her own blend of raw avant – pop music. She has performed her boundlessly creative live shows at all the main UK festivals including Glastonbury, Bestival, and Secret Garden.
