Sundara Karma announce their biggest headline show to date in September, including The Trinity Centre!

Support from:

Freak

The Night Café

Latest single ‘Loveblood’ was recently unveiled as Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record In The World’ on Radio 1. The track follows their ‘In New Music We Trust’ playlisted single ‘A Young Understanding’ and further demonstrates Sundara Karma’s extraordinary ability to build arena sized, widescreen rock songs.

Led by charismatic frontman Oscar Lulu, Sundara Karma are masters at crafting bright, panoramic indie rock whose bruised-heart lyrics deal with young romance and a yearning to escape small town mundanity.

Having spent 2015 firmly establishing themselves as ones-to-catch on the live circuit and festival tents, their captivatingly intense live shows have truly won the hearts of their crowd, building a dedicated cult teenage fan base. They have already completed a string of dates across Europe supporting Wolf Alice, embarked on their own sold out headline UK tour and joined Nothing But Thieves on their April tour. ‘Loveblood’ is sure to be the next step in what is shaping up to be an incredible year for the Reading four-piece, whose eagerly anticipated debut album will be released later in 2016.

Talking about ‘Loveblood’, frontman Oscar Lulu says: “The song is about fate, love and tragedy. A kind of Romeo and Juliet inspired thing. It’s also inspired by Oscar Wilde’s short story ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime’. Mysteries of the unexplained is something that has a huge appeal for me.”

Performed as Part of Emergenc(i)es

This workshop will look at types of silence as a palpable musical event within totally improvised music, as well as conversation; types of silence and ways of hearing/changing them.

All abilities welcome.

Born and based in Derby, Corey Mwamba's commitment to jazz and improvised music in Britain and Ireland drives all aspects of his work, whether through composition, playing, or promoting new music.

Corey predominantly plays vibraphone; he also plays dulcimer and uses audio processing software. He is recognised as a highly creative improviser and composer working across a wide range of jazz and contemporary music. Mwamba's distinctive approach and tone is instantly recognisable in any context: a potent blend of pure sound, highly melodic phrases and ethereal textures; barely whispered chords and ear-piercing robotic screams. Corey won a PRSF/Jerwood Foundation Take Five artist development award in 2007; was short-listed for the Innovation category in the BBC Jazz Awards in 2008; and was nominated for "Rising Star on Vibraphone" in the 62nd and 63rd DownBeat Annual Critics' Polls.

Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - the Texan trio Khruangbin is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums. Their debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool.

“We feel like there is an ease that comes from being immersed in a space, away from the distractions of the city and everyday life. We make our music in a barn, in the Texas hill country, because it makes sense to us. Being there allows us to make music that comes naturally, and that’s what we wanted this album to be. We wanted to make a record that just let the music happen, and we hope that’s what you can hear.”

‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favorites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound.

In 2 x120, cellist Bela Emerson invites the audience to become live co-creators. This forty-minute piece connects a series of spontaneous interactions between Emerson & individual audience members, who are invited to improvise with her for two minutes each. Participants are offered one of three specific ways of interacting (two sonic, one visual), to generate a unique collaborative flow of sound. Drawing together Emerson’s extensive experience as both improviser and community musician, this is innovative and inclusive work.

Bio: Bela Emerson is an innovative cellist who composes in the moment using electronic processing. She has performed residencies at Sydney Opera House and Royal Festival Hall, as well as being commissioned by BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction as a solo performer, and releasing four solo albums. Her various collaborative works with artists such as filmmaker Tereza Buskova, acrobats Mimbre and musicians Sarah Angliss and Stephen Hiscock have been supported by PRS and Arts Council England and commissioned by BBC Radio 4 and the BFI. Bela also works as a community musician with Open Strings Music and Rhythmix’s Wishing Well, using music as a tool for connection, engagement and wellbeing.

The beloved musical project of Kate Stables

This Is the Kit

This Is The Kit is the musical project of Kate Stables and long time collaborator Jesse Vernon, who are based in both Bristol and Paris. After appearing on Sunday Best Recordings’ 2006 compilation album ‘Folk Off’, the band received high praise from Drowned In Sound, and have subsequently been embraced by BBC radio for their quintessential ‘Britishness’. From 6Music, DJs Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe and Maconie, Marc Riley, Guy Garvey, Cerys Matthews, and Mary Anne Hobbs, and at Radio 1, Huw Stephens, Jen and Ally, and Phil Taggart have all given the band airplay.

On their third album, ‘Bashed Out’, the band collaborated with Aaron Dessner, best known for his work in The National. Indeed the record features the instrumental talents of not only the touring members of the band (Rozi Plain, Jesse Vernon, Jamie Whitby-Coles), but also session players from the Brooklyn music scene, including Bryce Dessner, Thomas Bartlett (Doveman, The Gloaming), Matt Barrick (The Walkmen) and Ben Lanz (Beirut, The National). The music remains quintessentially British, in a one-of-a-kind eccentric manner, and rooted in folk, but also encompasses elements of psychedelia, alternative rock, and electronic textures and sensibilities.

This is The Kit return to Trinity following performing live at BBC6 Music Festival Fringe February 2016.
