Martha Tilston has grown up immersed in music. Her singer/songwriter father Steve Tilston and renowned folk singer Maggie Boyle (step-mother) were obvious influences on the young Martha. Musicians of the 70s folk-revival such as Bert Jansch, John Rebourn and John Martin would often gather and sing in her kitchen.

Her subsequent musical journey has taken her from the acoustic stage at Glastonbury to touring the far reaches of the globe. She has also earned a nomination for Best Newcomer at the BBC Folk Awards while releasing six albums and featuring on the Zero 7 album ‘Yeah Ghost’.

Tilston began her musical tenure in folk duo Mouse (alongside Nick Marshall) and built up a dedicated word of mouth audience playing the London underground music scene, often sharing stages with the likes of Kate Tempest, Damien Rice amongst others. Her first lo-fi solo album released in 2003 then accompanied extensive touring with Damien Rice.

Her earthy compositions and delicate melodies swiftly attracted a sizeable fanbase and considerable record label interest, which she eschewed in favour of starting her own label, Squiggly Records. This led to 2004’s ‘Bimbling’ album and the free to download ‘Ropeswing’ two years later, the latter of which was credited to Martha Tilston & The Woods.

A period with The Woods established a musical relationship with Matt Tweed that has endured to this day via the albums ‘Milkmaids & Architects’ (2007), ‘Lucy & The Wolves (2010) and ‘Machines of Love & Grace’ (2012). In 2014 her highly acclaimed folk album ‘The Sea’ was named by BBC 6 Music’s Cerys Matthews as her album of the year.

With a voice like spider-webbed hollows and lyrics that inspire and captivate, Martha has built a large captive audience worldwide via her astute lyrical observations and mesmerising songs that range from stripped down acoustic arrangements to textural electronica with sparkling melodies and her beautiful crystal-clear vocals.

Mew are pleased to unveil news of their upcoming (seventh) album Visuals on 28th April 2017 through Play It Again Sam alongside details of a European run of live dates in May.

Unlike previous albums, Visuals arrives fairly quickly on the back of 2015’s ‘+ -‘ album and came to fruition as front-man Jonas Bjerre explains; “the live shows around that album saw us hit a creative peak, writing tracks on-the-road and the spark was lit. Breaking the normal cycle felt right and we wanted to make an album spontaneously retaining the energy we’d generated on that world tour, rather than wait the normal three or four years.”

Recorded and self-produced in Copenhagen, Visuals was completed in under a year and sees Mew at their most concise, each song representing its own little chapter and narrative. The first taste of the album comes in the shape of the mesmerising intricacies of the album’s finale Carry Me To Safety.

Meanwhile, the slow-build euphoria of album opener, Nothingness And No Regrets, and expansive 80’s-style pop of The Wake Of Your Life countered by the discordant stomp of the intriguingly titled Candy Pieces All Smeared Out and blissful glide of In A Better Place, compete across eleven tracks that convey an irrepressible ebullience of a band on their debut album. Many of the newer tracks evolved in light of what was happening globally. “It was pretty dark last year on many levels, so lyrically that definitely came into play, it’s an important reminder to treasure the here and now,” says Bjerre. Visuals feels like the culmination for one of rock’s most ambitious and inventive groups.

Twenty years into their career, Visuals is the distinctive sound of Mew seizing the moment…

Mew embark a short run of European shows in May, pre-sale tickets will go on sale at 09.00am on 25th January, and general sale starts at 09:00am on 27th January. The full list of dates is below.

Visuals will be released on CD, vinyl and digitally through Play It Again Sam and is available to pre-order here: http://found.ee/mewstore

Johnny Flynn has shared news of his long awaited fourth album, ‘Sillion’, alongside first single ‘Raising the Dead’. ‘Sillion’ will be released 24th March through Transgressive Records.

‘Sillion’ has grown episodically between Flynn’s commitments to acting, composing, and his young family. It’s an album about the sacredness of man’s endeavour to connect with the earth while separated from it. It’s the sound of Flynn breathing in and breathing out.

The titles of Flynn’s records have become a talismanic focus for him over the years, and ‘Sillion’ rings out like a bell, converging unlikely forces — friendship, politics, poetry – to capture the album’s colour and mood as a measure of its times.

‘Sillion’ sees Flynn reunited with David Beauchamp (drums), Adam Beach (bass), Joe Zeitlin (cello), sister Lillie Flynn & Holly Holden (vocals), with guests Cosmo Sheldrake (electronics) and Dave Tattersall on lead guitar for ‘The Landlord’.

‘Raising the Dead’, tells of Flynn getting to know his newborn daughter. “My Dad died when I was 18, and that was quite a galvanising experience,” Flynn says, “and there’s often an element of that in anything I’m writing; every big loss that you suffer in life, I think everything comes through the conduit of that. I had a really strong sense of my daughter having elements of my Dad when she came along, and it made me kind of laugh - that cyclical sense, of thinking of my daughter as my Dad.”

A March headline UK tour with his band The Sussex Wit has also been announced, plus solo appearances at the SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas. Tickets for the UK tour go on sale Wednesday 18th January at 9am.

This show is now at The Fleece

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. At the age of nine, Seun expressed the wish to sing to his father. A short while later Seun started performing with his father and the band, until his father’s untimely death in 1997. Seun, then only 14-years-old, assumed the role as lead singer of Egypt 80. Ever since, Seun has followed the political and social ethos of his father. Along the way, he began to add his own twist to the music, digging deep into various African traditions to reflect the continent's struggles and cultures. About three-quarters of the current Egypt 80 line-up consists of musicians that not only played with Fela Kuti, but often were arrested and harassed alongside the founder of the Afrobeat movement. Seun Kuti has toured the world and previously released three critically acclaimed albums as well as last year’s Struggle Sounds EP.
