NNTS Presents one of the finest bands on this planet;

Battles

The band’s second album, “Gloss Drop” will be released on June 6, 2011. The album’s first single, “Ice Cream”, was released in March 2011.

Battles and have caused a maelstrom of interest in the last 18 months, despite having only released 3 EPs. A phenomenon that began in NYC, they soon broke out of the cliquey East Coast scene, accumulating a fervent legion of fans across the US, a testament to their astounding live performances. And now, kicking off 2006 we present them to you with a uniquely packaged introductory album.

Perhaps you have already come across this frenetic, experimental East Coast sensation when they headlined Eat Your Own Ears and rammed it to the rafters; perhaps you soon will when they play at the taste making ATP weekender in December.

Precisely why they are one of the hottest US alt. imports is this; technically awe inspiring, Battles concoct a mix of strident post-rock/ jazz/ hardcore and electronics, stunning crowds with mind boggling poly-rhythmic sequences and complicated time signatures, hurtled at you with sheer sonic velocity.

Too beat orientated to be dubbed ‘post rock’, as vanguards Battles stand on their own in the realm of contemporary music. Battles will captivate you live with the dexterous competency of each member, executing musical forms previously unattainable outside the sphere of the electronic scene.

Some have dubbed Battles a ‘supergroup’ – John Stanier on drums, originating from the legacy that is Helmet, and still lending his skills to Mike Patton’s Tomahawk and Australian powerhouse The Mark of Cain; Ian Williams guitarist/ keyboardist known for his distinctive guitar styling in cult band Don Caballero; Dave Konopka, guitar and bass, previously in the underground band Lynx and Tyondai Braxton, avant-garde solo musician (who recently collaborated with Prefuse 73), here vox/ keyboardist/ guitar/ electronics

As Battles explain, their sound is “Somewhere between electronic and rock. Those two factors. Since we’ve always been in bands, at this point we’re like horses trained to pull the sled w/ 3 marshall half stacks plus 80lb. trap case everywhere we go, but we don’t have to play garage music the way you might if all the members had only been in garage bands before. Battles can do what it wants.”

And the result is evolved and fresh and justifies their position as the apple of the alternative scene’s eye. Everyone has Battles in their lives.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

New York-based musicians Alex Naidus (bass), Kip Berman (guitar/vocals), Kurt Feldman (drums), and Peggy Wang-East (keyboards/vocals) came together to form the Pains of Being Pure at Heart in 2007. With its wall-of-fuzz guitar stylings and sugary pop underpinnings, the band nodded to any number of old-school indie pop and shoegaze acts, most notably Black Tambourine and My Bloody Valentine. The band recorded a few tracks soon after forming, which were released as a self-titled 3" CD-R on Cloudberry Records. A self-titled EP followed soon after for Painbow. During 2008 the band released a number of limited-edition split singles on Atomic Beat Records and Slumberland. Their first album, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, was released in February of 2009 on Slumberland and the good reviews and positive press (including a spot on Late Night with Carson Daly) made them one of the most talked about bands of early 2009. After the release of the summer 2010 single Say No to Love, legendary producers Flood (Smashing Pumpkins) and Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine) were hired to give the band's sound a slicker, more powerful sound. The resulting album, Belong, was released by Slumberland in March of 2011.

Pitchfork: Best New Music

It's immediately appealing in the same way their debut was-- Kip Berman's aw-shucks lyrics ("She was the heart in your heartbreak/ She was the miss in your mistake") arcing with effortless melody, with the underrated and understated rhythm section propelling everything forward, at least until the dramatic pause.

But while the interior decoration of "Heartbreak" is more luxuriant than we're used to from Pains, it's more a matter of spatial relationships than pricey embellishment-- the handclaps, synth beams, and frazzled tone of the guitar solo are the sort of trimmings that marked their economically packed debut, but each is given far more room to breathe and flourish. It's like they've come back from a lavish spa treatment-- an earned indulgence...

The L Magazine

And when we tell you to go buy it, we mean push yourself away from your computer, stand up from your desk, go outside and enjoy the crisp, frigid winter day, as you make your way toward your nearest independent record store*, where you will take a few dollars out of your pocket, and purchase an actual, physical copy of it, which you can hold and feel and smell and admire for being pressed on purple vinyl. When you get it home later, you'll sit on the floor next to your record player and listen to the A-side, "Heart in Your Heartbreak," while doing absolutely nothing else except maybe looking a little more closely at the beautiful, substantial packaging and cover art. When that song is over, you'll flip the record and listen to B-side "The One," still while doing nothing else. Just listening. When you're finished, you might want to listen a few more times. Now you're free to let the rest of your life carry on as usual. Maybe make yourself some dinner. Maybe hang some Christmas decorations. After a little while, or maybe after a few seconds, you'll realize that, jeez, this is how listening to records is supposed to feel. And then you'll realize that, jeez, these two Pains of Being Pure at Heart songs are worlds better than all the really great stuff they've already done, and that, jeez, if this is any indication of what's in store for us on the full-length they've got scheduled for release in March, then we have an awful lot to look forward to.

Just a minute of the intro will be enough to confirm this is not a man who thinks inside given confines, The End Of You Too is a track throwing some intriguing shapes, colour combinations and styles. It crucially all sounds live, so even if it has been constructed on a computer, the presence of live musicians has given Metronomy's music an essentially human element, making it more vulnerable as a result.

Laid Blak represent 'good vibes' music. The latest addition to Chris Blackwell and Tricky's new label Brown Punk, Laid Blak has been brought up on Marley, roots, carnival music and soundsystem culture. As they've grown, their musical direction took a course that led them to seek out some of Bristol's finest musicians. What started as a studio project became the acclaimed live act - Laid Blak.

MC Joe Peng shares front of stage with the vocal rocket launcher that is Flex. Flex has the voice and stage presence to grab any audience and devour them. The live set is centred in urban reggae, but touches on jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop. No one ever forgets a Laid Blak performance; the charisma and musical dexterity of the band leave a lasting impression. This is dance music aimed at getting you moving. The 'good vibes' shine through all the songs and they always steal the show at festivals, one review noting them as 'the essential festival band'.

In Laid Blak's journey so far they have supported heavyweights Julian Marley, John Legend and Desmond Dekker.
