Directed by Wils Wilson

Pull up a chair and wet your whistle for an evening of anarchic theatre, live music and strange goings-on....

One wintry morning, Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, sets off to attend a conference in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. As the snow begins to fall, little does she know who or what awaits her. Inspired by the border ballads - and delivered in a riotous romp of rhyming couplets, devilish encounters and wild karaoke - Prudencia’s dream-like journey of self-discovery unfolds among and around the audience.

With a rollicking text by David Greig, barnstorming live music, and a ‘terrific, inventive sense of fun.’ (THE SCOTSMAN), The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart is the lock-in to end all lock-ins.

National Theatre of Scotland cannot be held responsible in the event of any member of the audience losing their head, their heart or their very self during the course of the performance.

BSL interpreted performance on Sun 20th May

***** THE TIMES

“You shouldn’t miss this show for the world…rambunctiously life-affirming and touchingly beautiful.”

“Ska is ubiquitous, and there’s no disputing that they started it all.
The Skatalites are the seminal ska band from Jamaica which originated in 1964. As studio musicians who backed the likes of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and The Maytalls. Prince Buster, Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis, and just about every vocalist in Jamaica in the early 60’s, the band was formed to perform live so these musicians could become recognized for their contributions to Jamaican popular music. They performed all over the island and recorded with every available producer on the island at the time and officially were only together for about 15 months, disbanding in 1965. In 1966 they were on the charts in the UK with their rendition of the movie them “The Guns of Navarone”. Ska began to evolve into rocksteady and then reggae and The Skatalites had created the roots to the tree which has branched into dub, lover’s rock, two-tone, ska-punk, ska-jazz, and ragga. Members of The Skatalites remained on the scene throughout this evolution in groups like Tommy McCook and The Supersonics, The Soul Vendors, and Sound Dimension and recorded with producers like Bunny Lee and Lee “Scratch” Perry. In 1983 The Skatalites reunited to stake their claim to the music which had become so popular through the emergence of bands like The Police, The Clash, The Specials and The English Beat. Subsequently the members emigrated to the USA where they began touring worldwide and spawned what is now known as the “third wave” of ska. In 2012 they continue to tour the world playing for the biggest and best festivals, as well as the more intimate club shows. Although time has seen the passing of most of the original members the band still consists of the finest musicians in their genre and, from the first note to the last, stir their audiences into an elated dancing frenzy.

Resonators

'Resonators are storming the UK dub and reggae scene with their new and unique sound, using deep basslines and stunning harmonies to break out of the genre and into an irresistible form of live dance music. This and their contagiously fun and entertaining stage presence has had a big impact on audiences nationwide. Their new single, 'Surrender' has just come out on 7" with the Wah Wah 45 label, as will their second album this summer.

Since the self release of their debut album Resonators have gained radio support on BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music and Kiss Fm from the likes of Mark Lamarr, David Rodigan and Craig Charles. Here's what reggae guru Rodigan had to say about the record:

“…elements are truly beautiful and haunting. In these days of homogenised, digital recordings lacking in any individual sound or identity it is most encouraging to hear something so truly original… most refreshing”

2011 has seen the band grace the stage at legendary venues including Brixton Academy alongside Fat Freddy's Drop, Koko, Jazz Cafe and at the UK and Europe's top festivals including Glastonbury and Outlook Croatia.'

Links: www.resonatorsmusic.co.uk

Alabama 3 Acoustic and Unplugged is a four-piece outfit consisting of Larry Love (vocals), Aurora Dawn (vocals), Rock Freebase (guitar), and Harpo Strangelove (harmonica).

With this line up they bring a whole new dimension to the songs made famous by Alabama 3. This isn’t acid house music, this is country/gospel/delta blues, but played with a rhythm you’ve still got to dance to. With the addition of Aurora Dawn to the line up there’s an added injection of soul – or, as it says on the cover of the band’s previous album ‘Revolver Soul’ this is ‘soul music with a gun against your head’. Their latest album 'Shoplifting 4 Jesus' is out now.

Benefit gig in aid of Womankind - we will also be collecting with a number of other charities on the night. So why not join us and catch Alabama 3 in an intimate setting in aid of some great causes!

Fixed in Space and Time are a 5 piece electronic dance-punk band incorporating live drums, percussion, 2 guitarists and lead singer with synths and loops.

They are somewhat difficult to categorise but influences range from postpunk bands such as P.I.L. to krautrock like Can, electronica and the free party / festival scenes of the 90s.

Fusing electronic sounds, dance music basslines and post-punk space-rock guitar posturing and attitude F.I.S.T. are most definately a 'live' act. Recent gigs have been very well received with a growing eclectic fan base. In the words of a recent convert "exactly what live music should be, exciting and mental"

Andrew Bird

+ Woodpigeon

Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of 4 and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. When it came time for a restless teen-ager to make his own way, it wasn’t such a giant leap to Hungarian Gypsy music, early jazz, country blues, south Indian etc. It's fitting that now, though classically trained, he has opted to play his violin in a most unconventional manner, accompanying himself on glockenspiel and guitar, adding singing and whistling to the equation, and becoming a pop songwriter in the process.

His work was first acclaimed in the concert setting by the curious attraction of one man generating the wealth of sound normally produced by an orchestra, seemingly composing, or at least structuring the songs. Passages of violin, guitar, voice and glockenspiel are looped and layered forging a texture of definitive hooks and rhythms out of spontaneous stabs and strums. Each night is unique; Andrew rarely replicates the album version, as beloved as they may be.

Since beginning his recording career in 1997, he has released eleven albums. His 2009 album Noble Beast won praise from Esquire, the New York Times Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, NPR, Rolling Stone, Spin, and many others. He followed the release with a worldwide tour that kicked off at Carnegie Hall and included appearances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Radio City Music Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, the Sydney Opera House and the TED conference, along with a few hundred more destinations.

Amazon.com recently named Bird’s Mysterious Production of Eggs one of the "100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of All Time," and more recently his prior effort, The Swimming Hour, enjoyed a vinyl reissue —about which the typically sedate Pitchfork enthused: “a stroke of genius…a killer batch of songs that add up to a sublimely enjoyable whole.” More recently, contributed his rendition of Kermit classic 'Bein Green' to the new Muppets movie record The Green Album, as well as scored the original soundtrack for independent film Norman.
