NO ONE LIVING IN BRISTOL should be starving, going without food for days. NO CHILD LIVING IN BRISTOL should be crying themselves to sleep at night with hunger pains because they have not had a decent meal for days. It should not be this way but THIS IS the sad reality for many thousands of people, both in and out of work, living in Bristol in 2013. Food poverty is a fact of life that can effect almost anyone. Due to very high personal indebtedness, job insecurity, the rising costs of living, and severe welfare budget cuts, the majority of people living in Bristol today are at risk of food poverty. For the victims it is a chilling and severely damaging experience and for society as a whole the impact of food poverty is very costly. It has been estimated that malnutrition costs the UK's health services up to £7.4 billion a year, 50% of which is spent in community settings (ONS).

Please help us make a difference by helping those caught in this poverty trap.

Your support is crucial to enable us to continue the vital work we do and contribute towards making Bristol a better place to live, for everyone.

Delhi 2 Dublin

+ DJ Ritu

Kicking off this August bank holiday, we're very excited to announce that kickass Canadian 5-piece world fusion dance band, Delhi 2 Dublin, are playing at The Trinity Centre, sure to be a sell out show.

Delhi 2 Dublin challenges the definition of urban music and drags it to the intersection of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub Reggae, Rock and Electronica. Strong word-of-mouth for their live performances has helped them play several of the top festivals in Canada, the UK, the US, the Pacific Rim and Europe. A new album and international touring opportunities signal that originality and evolution are all part of the Delhi 2 Dublin experience.

YELLOWCARD present Ocean Avenue Acoustic

+ Like Torches

Hot on the heels with the news that their 2003 breakthrough single “Ocean Avenue” has just been certified platinum (over one million sold), American pop-punk band YELLOWCARD have another reason to celebrate: this year marks the tenth anniversary of that single and its album of the same name. To kick it off, Yellowcard and Hopeless Records are releasing Ocean Avenue Acoustic, a re-imagining of all 13 songs from that album in an acoustic setting.

“On July 22, 2003 our lives were changed forever,” says the band in a joint statement. “We didn't know what Ocean Avenue would become, but it is a chapter in our story that we will never forget. We knew that for the 10th anniversary of the release we wanted to do something more than just a tour.” "Special limited edition pre-order packages of the album including exclusive white vinyl, a one time only pressing 7", hand written lyric sheets by Ryan Key and more are available now at Moment.Yellowcardrock.com.

Soon after the release of the acoustic album, the band will hit the road throughout the US as part of House of Blues 20th Anniversary Presents, performances at Harley Fest and Riot Fest, and in Europe and Australia. “In the US and Australia, we will be performing the entire [Ocean Avenue] record acoustically from start to finish, and then closing the show with an electric set that covers the other albums,” they explain. “In Europe, we will be playing the Vans Warped Tour, so the headlining shows will just be Ocean Avenue Acoustic. To hear the other records you'll have to get to the closest Warped date!”

In celebration of this 10 year milestone, Yellowcard is launching moment.yellowcardrock.com, an interactive space for fans to share their favorite Yellowcard moments, both past and present. Fans can contribute to the site by posting their favorite moments to Instagram or Twitter and using the hashtag #YCMoment. The trailer for the album can be seen here: http://smarturl.it/YCOceanAveTrailer.

With over two and a half million albums sold and counting, Yellowcard continue to dominate the music world, garnering fan support and critical acclaim alike. With eight singles that have received significant Top 40 and Alternative radio airplay including the smash “Ocean Avenue”, Yellowcard continued their steady progression with their eighth and latest solo album Southern Air on Hopeless Records last year. Debuting on Billboard’s Top 200 Album Chart at #10, Southern Air is their fifth album to reach the Top 20 (and second in the Top 10).

“It's going to be a big year for all of us and you together,” they conclude. “Ocean Avenue is a legacy that we are very proud of, so both the album and the tour are things we've put a lot of work into. Thanks for your continued love and support, and we will see you this Fall!”

So we are pleased to welcome Aba Shanti-I to Bristol to run selection on his own sound for the whole night, a much rarer event now than it was in the 90s! We remember his resident dances in London venues The Arches, Southall Community Centre, Imperial Gardens and of course the legendary carnival sessions in Leicester and Notting Hill.

Aba will take you on a spiritual journey through roots music; focussing on many of the classic dubplates he championed during his 20+ years of soundsystem. Many people were concerned after discovering that Aba couldn't make the UNOD Weekender due to ill health - with Aba now fully recovered and fighting-fit we are extremely pleased to bring you the sound of Jah lightning and thunder for this all night session!

ABA SHANTI-I SOUNDYSTEM

Friday 14th June 2013
Trinity Centre

10pm – 5am

Tickets: £10+bf / MOTD

Qu Junktions Presents "high-speed dance phenomenon from South Africa"

“Shangaan dancers, they dance, they can go on for almost an hour with that speed, without getting tired. When you see them dance you feel like they have got no bones” – Nozinja (Shangaan Electro)

Shangaan Electro is the high-speed dance phenomenon from South Africa that is rising from streets into clubs, homes and venues all around the globe.

This summer Nozinja and the fastest Shangaan dancers around are offering participants of all ages and abilities the chance to learn the secrets of this unique and infectious style. Dazzling footwork and rubber-limbed body shakes combine with hyper-accelerated beats and some crazy, colourful costumes to give the Shangaan style wide-ranging summer appeal.

Open to all ages and abilities. Under 16′s should be accompanied by an adult

Participants are advised to wear suitable clothing and bring water
Workshop starts at 7.30pm and lasts 60 mins approx
Limited capacity, early booking is recommended

The creation of charismatic producer, record label mogul and businessman Nozinja, Shangaan Electro is a very contemporary product of Africa. Hailing from rural Limpopo but now based in Soweto, Nozinja saw the chance to update Shangaan music for the 21st Century, replacing its traditional bass/guitar instrumentation with midi-keyboard sounds and repitched vocal samples (in English and seemingly sampled from rave anthems). Propelled by jacking four-to-the-floor beats and trademark drum-fills, the sound quickly became a hit at weekly street parties in Soweto, with young and old competing to show off their moves to this dizzyingly fast music, which can reach speeds of up to 188 beats per minute.

The craze soon went viral in Europe and the US via a vast archive of youtube videos (several million hits and counting), catching the attention of Damon Albarn’s Honest Jon’s label who released the seminal Shangaan Electro compilation in 2010. The universal acclaim received for this release led to countless invitations for the group to perform around the world, and the group have since performed scene-stealing turns at festivals and club across the globe.

Tickets: £4

Available from: Bristol Ticket Shop

“This is the cheetah of African music” – NPR Music

“Daring… wildly inventive… [and] a rare depth charge in dance music circles, reminding us of the myriad musics people use to inspire movement” – Pitchfork

“The future sound of Africa…[and] a curveball for UK dancers” – The Quietus
