Join the New Consciousness Revolution!
Conscious Frontiers presents Future NOW, a one-day conference and charity fundraiser organised by Will Gethin and Joe Hoare at the Trinity Centre, Bristol, on Saturday 8th November. This event explores urgent solutions and mindful steps we need to take to sustain the Earth so we can secure bright, happy and sustainable lives for our children and grandchildren.

Featuring groundbreaking presentations, powerful performances and interactive breakout sessions with leading eco and spiritual pioneers Satish Kumar, Peter Owen Jones, Tim Freke, Chloe Goodchild and Joe Hoare – interspersed with sacred sounds and chants - Future NOW calls for an Inner Revolution.

It’s a call to become more mindful, more peaceful, more connected and more loving to ourselves, to each other and to the Earth. It urges us to change our “Descartes” inherited philosophical perspective of ourselves as separate from each other and the Earth and embrace our interconnectedness. It calls for us to grow beyond the selfish drives of our materialistic society and create a new way – moving from self interest to mutual interest, reciprocity and interdependence.

Throughout the day, conference participants are invited to explore how we can each make a difference and take urgent action to be the change in our daily lives. The breakout discussion sessions continuously echo and reflect on the question, “What am I going to do differently?”

Future NOW is an invitation to have a voice, to help shape our collective future and to take an active role in propagating the New Consciousness Revolution.

10 very earlybird tickets are now available starting at £30, till 21st August, rising to £55.

Exhibition and screening of documentary by local artist Helen Wilson-Roe. Live music spoken word and Q&A

Artist Helen Wilson-Roe’s portrait paintings highlight the forgotten histories of their subjects. For 17 years artist Helen Wilson-Roe has been researching the life of Henrietta Lacks. In 2010 she began collaborating with the Lacks family to make visible the image of a woman who unknowingly had an incredible impact on medical history.

Henrietta Lacks was a young African-American mother from Baltimore who died in 1951 of unusually aggressive cervical cancer. Henrietta is remarkable because a sample of her cancer cells became the first cells to survive and multiply outside the human body, forming an ‘immortal’ cell line known as HeLa.

HeLa have been grown in laboratories around the world and millions of people have benefitted medically from the advances they enabled. Research using HeLa cells has led to some of the most important developments in medical history including the Polio vaccine, cloning and gene sequencing.

Working closely with Bristol scientists Professor Craig McArdle, Professor Jon Lane and Professor Harry Mellor, Helen Wilson-Roe has had unique access to the HeLa cells in the laboratory environment. Her project invites us to consider questions around permission, recognition and the role of the individual in large scientific projects.

Through her portraits of the Lacks family and the documentary Helen Wilson-Roe aims to bring their story to the fore and to make Henrietta’s image and her family’s pride at her legacy, visible beyond the scientific research community. Helen has gifted the Lacks family portraits, and copyright to the Lacks family.

Jeri Lacks Whye, Henrietta Lacks granddaughter, says, “Thanks again Helen. We will finally have a very special piece that we, as Henrietta's descendants, can say we own (copyright). I'm so excited - overfilled with joy and proud. Words can't describe how I felt when I saw the wonderful portrait you have painted of Henrietta Lacks.

The display on Henrietta Lacks will run from 10th October till October 17th 2014 in Trinity’s upstairs gallery and is suitable for all ages. Access 9am - 5pm daily

The way we give birth has changed dramatically over the past 30 years. Some leading scientists are warning that these changes could have serious repercussions for the lifelong health of our children.

"Microbirth" is a new feature-length documentary looking at birth in a whole new way; through the lens of a microscope. Investigating the latest scientific research, the film reveals how we give birth could impact the lifelong health of our children.

Join the birth community in Bristol for the world premiere of this ground breaking film.

Featuring prominent scientists from the UK and North America, “Microbirth” examines how modern birth practices could be interfering with critical biological processes potentially making our children more susceptible to disease later in life. Recent population studies have shown babies born by Caesarean Section have approximately a 20% increased risk of developing asthma, 20% increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes, a similar risk with obesity and slightly smaller increases with gastro-intestinal conditions like Crohn's disease or coeliac disease. These conditions are all linked to the immune system. “Microbirth” explores several possible explanations. If a baby is born by Caesarean Section, scientists hypothesise this could alter the “seeding” of the baby's microbiome, the critical transfer of good bacteria from mother to baby at birth. Scientists suggest this could lead to the baby's immune system not developing to its full potential. Another hypothesis is the actual process of vaginal birth, including the cocktail of hormones produced during labour, could profoundly affect the baby's immune regulation and metabolism.

Damon Albarn performing at Trinity with the Heavy Seas

This gig really was something for the dedicated Damonite. Tickets sold out in 3 minutes as a fan club only event, and he did not disappoint his core following. Starting with two new tracks - Lonely Press Play and the album title Everyday Robots, Albarn then took his audience through a back catalogue tour of Blur, Gorrilaz, The Good, The Bad and The Queen, as well as the joyous Rock Juice and The Moon Song.

Damon Albarn is a master of smaller, independent, venues. His engaging style and warmth fills even the cosiest of venues, but you never get the feeling his ego or acoustic prowess will extend beyond the walls of this intimate, gothic, Bristol setting. This engagement did however extend into the consciousness of the audience that night, with everyone a riding high on a sense that the former Blur frontman will remember the evening as much as the punters as he blasted out Last Living Souls accompanied by his band, The Heavy Seas.

Next came the dedication of the Gorrilaz’s number Slow Country to Massive Attack which harked back to not only the venues status as the birthplace of the Bristol Sound, but also to alluring atmosphere that has drawn in the aforementioned trip-hop artists and The Prodigy amongst others. Securing these acts is a result of Trinity’s strong musical heritage, and the passion for the intimate, incognito, atmosphere that artists of the calibre of Damon Albarn obviously have.

His crowd pleasing encore involved an 8 strong gospel choir from East London, who supported 2 new songs; Mr Tembo and Heavy Seas of Love. But what got the crowd romping and jumping was a version of Gorillaz’s Clint Eastwood that featured Bristol-based paramedic K*Ners, who when he is not rescuing the sick, rescued the hip-hop sections of the song due to a last minute drop out of Damon’s preferred Snoop Dogg wannabe.

It was refreshing to see Albarn finish on the soporifically sombre - This is a Low, which was both the low note, and the high point, of this particular performance.

Celebrating Jamaican Independence with support from Bristol Reggae Orchestra

The mighty Jazz Jamaica has rightly earned its reputation as “one of the UK’s leading good-time bands” (The Independent) from their many exuberant live performances and dynamic album releases over the past two and half decades. Trinity Arts Centre is thrilled to play host to this fantastic band when they make a very welcome return to Bristol led by their bassist and founder, Gary Crosby – nephew of the great Jamaican guitarist, Ernest Ranglin.

Jazz Jamaica is guaranteed to have you on your feet and dancing with their special blend of rock steady rhythms, skanking ska beats, and pumping reggae grooves interweaved with sophisticated jazz swing!

They’ll be laying down some of your best-loved tunes of all time in the process: Skatalites classic, ‘Guns Of Navarone’, Prince Buster’s ‘Al Capone’, and Harry J All Stars’ ‘Liquidator’ to name but a few.

Making a very special guest appearance is the sensational Myrna Hague – an original from the famed Studio One record label (What About Me, How Could I Live…), a pioneer of Lovers Rock and today, Jamaica’s First Lady Of Jazz.

Support will come from the wonderful Bristol Reggae Orchestra, one of the UK’s most inspiring and uplifting community projects. Set up in early 2010, this 30 strong group of musicians from all backgrounds has consistently delighted audiences, at St Paul’s Carnival, festivals and major concert venues in the South West and Wales. Their unique sound has reggae at its heart, but draws in diverse voices from many local communities, including songs and music developed in collaboration with talented refugee musicians.
