Asian Arts Agency presents Aadhunik: a new Asian Music night exploring the best of contemporary South Asian music. Launching this December, Aadhunik brings a night of explosive, Bhangra-infused rhythm and music to Bristol and London. We’re delighted to present DJ Rekha from New York City’s long-standing and amazing Basement Bhangra at the forefront, accompanied by UK-based The Dhol Foundation and more exciting artists yet to be announced.

DJ Rekha’s long-running and famous Basement Bhangra nights have been a part of the New York scene since 1997, along with her weekly radio show Bhangra and Beyond. Named the “Ambassador of Bhangra” by the New York Times, DJ Rehka’s set will combine visual elements with her unique Bhangra sound to send audiences wild!

The Dhol Foundation’s explosion of drum and bass, table, hip-hop, and Bhangra rhythms have made them a favourite around the UK, while master Dhol Drummer Johnny Kalsi has played with artists from all around the world, including the Afro celts, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Avril Lavigne. The UK’s finest rhythm machine will set Trinity alight!

DJ Bobby Friction has represented the British Asian sound all over the world, from Asia to the US, from the Middle East to the whole of Europe. He’s built his reputation as a genre-mixing musician at a range of incredible shows, from an outdoor New Year’s Eve gig in Bangalore to playing for such festivals as Glastonbury, Bestival, WOMAD, the World Music Festival in Chicago, and Burning Man.

Come along and celebrate contemporary South Asian music at its best in this brand new music night that will set itself at the forefront of British Asian sound, produced and presented by Asian Arts Agency.

Grammy award winner Patty Griffin is equally acclaimed as an extraordinarily talented singer and musician, and as an uncommonly perceptive songwriter with a genius for character driven story telling. Her work has been covered by the likes of Emmylou Harris, The Dixie Chicks, Joan Baez and Bette Midler. Her tenth album, Servant of Love, is widely regarded as the highlight of an outstandingly rich career – the product of influences ranging from country, folk, blues, gospel and jazz with echoes of North Africa.
Devin Townsend is pleased to announce that he will return to the UK this October for some special ‘An Evening With’ acoustic shows, where he will be playing stripped down versions of his material, as well as taking fan requests and even a little spoken-word.

Last year, Devin Townsend Project released the acclaimed Z² double-album, and more recently the two parts that made up that album , ‘Dark Matters’ & ‘Sky Blue’, were released as separate CD editions. Earlier this year Devin capped off a European headline tour with a sold-out show at London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall venue. Metal Hammer awarded it a 9/10 review, calling it a “universe of joyful surprises” and that it was “unlikely the Royal Albert Hall has witnessed such abandonment.”

Coupled with these are foundational questions, such as:
“Why are we here? What is it to be human? What is life?”

This event aims to provide a relaxed space to discuss these questions, whilst equip people with the tools and information to guide their decision-making processes.

How are we going to do this?
The heart of Rising Questions is the small group, round a table hosted by a moderator. This is where people can ask questions, talk through issues, build relationships and community. The small groups are not like other small groups. The moderator’s focus is on allowing guests the space to ask questions rather than offering all the answers, and to elicit new questions. Initial stimulation is provided by a challenging talk from the front.

Come along, book tickets now at the link above, all profit donated to a local charity

DHP Presents Bear's Den

Lisa Mitchell

Bear’s Den will release their Ivor Novello nominated single ‘Above The Clouds Of Pompeii’ on July 27th. Watch the official video on YouTube here.

‘Above The Clouds Of Pompeii’ is taken from Bear’s Den’s debut album ‘Islands’ which is out now on Communion Records / Caroline International, and was written by the band’s Andrew Davie.

Speaking of the song, Davie says, “It’s an amalgamation of many of my feelings growing up. Trying to connect with people and also my first times dealing with loss. My Dad and I went on a trip to Pompeii when I was really young and I was thinking about it one day, nostalgically and also kinda painfully remembering stuff from when I was a kid and trying to communicate how I felt back then. That Pompeii trip made a huge impression on me and seemed to be the right place and time in my childhood for me to try and articulate all those things.

“I wrote Above The Clouds Of Pompeii a few years ago, in the back of a VW camper van, on Bear's Den's first ever tour in America. Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Staves were also on that tour and it was hugely inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented songwriters night after night.”

A feature-length music documentary of this tour, ‘Austin To Boston’, will get its global release on 12th June via Netflix and iTunes, fresh from a successful run of screenings at international film festivals. The film was directed by James Marcus Haney (No Cameras Allowed), produced by Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons) & Ty Johnson (Sideshow Alley), and narrated by Gill Landry (Old Crow Medicine Show).

Bear’s Den will embark on a European headline tour this October 2015, culminating with a previously announced show at London’s Roundhouse on 27th October. Tickets go on general sale on Friday 5th June at 10am.

The new dates follow the band’s completely sold out tour earlier in the year where numerous venues upgraded due to ticket demand.

And watch the band performing ‘Think Of England’ live in front of a sold out homecoming crowd at Shepherd’s Bush Empire on YouTube here.

Bear’s Den now have a busy summer of US and European festival appearances ahead of them, including Glastonbury, Citadel, and Reading & Leeds festivals in the UK.
