<p>Trinity are hosting a new series of Music Masterclasses for young people aged 16 to 25 interested in learning more about performing and working in the music and events industries.</p>
<p>Trinity have invited top industry professionals from Bristol and beyond to come and share their knowledge and insights in a series of exclusive workshops and classes. This series will feature a diverse range of guests whose jobs include performing ,producing and mixing music, as well as assisting musicians in roles such as programming, label management, radio, and much more.</p>
<p>Music Masterclasses form part of Trinity’s ongoing commitment to providing vocational training for young people in Bristol who may otherwise experience barriers to accessing the arts and music industries.</p>
<p>This series will provide young people with industry advice ,guidance and practical learning, as well as opportunities to connect and collaborate with other young people in the city.</p>

<p class="BCX0 SCXW155829580 Paragraph">We are working in partnership with South Bristol Youth (SBY) to provide opportunities for KS4 students to experience insights into working in the creative sectors as part of their 'insight into apprenticeship' initiative.</p>
<p class="BCX0 SCXW155829580 Paragraph">Connecting with local comprehensive and community schools we have programmed experiences for students, who may be historically excluded from the arts, that aim to provide insights into the various careers available in the cultural sector.</p>

<p class="BCX0 SCXW155829580 Paragraph">Recently we hosted students from City Academy, a local school that is situated in Lawrence Hill, one of the most deprived wards in the city whose cohort of over 1000 students have higher-than-average EAL/SEND.</p>
<p class="BCX0 SCXW155829580 Paragraph">During the visit students were taken on a guided tour of Trinity, detailing aspects of the grade II* listed buildings historic and cultural significance, highlighting the impact Trinity has had on the local community and wider music and arts scene within the city over the years.</p>
<p class="BCX0 SCXW155829580 Paragraph">They also took part in a series of music workshops, including, DJ, drumming and live performance. Trinity’s Youth Music Activities Manager Dave then led a masterclass session on music events promotion and podcasting.</p>
<p class="BCX0 SCXW155829580 Paragraph">This exciting partnership will help young people to reach their potential in work and in life, by building the skills, knowledge and confidence to better understand the pathways to apprenticeships, higher education and suitable employment. We will be hosting more schools over the coming months as well as our free-to-access Masterclasses this summer for young people who are interested in working in the music industry.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>Making Tracks was a four-year music making project delivered by Trinity in partnership with Basement Studios and ACE.</p>
<p style="line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 0cm; ">We worked with young people challenging personal circumstances offering space and guidance to develop their skills and confidency through music-making.</p>
<p style="line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 0cm; ">Activities included 1-2-1 and groups sessions delivered by professional musicians working in the industry, covering a wide range of music from guitar and bass to rap and post-production.</p>
<p style="line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 0cm; ">Trinity works in partnership with pupil referral units, schools and organisations to provide regular support and guidance, to help young people re-engage with school, find internships, work placements, employment opportunities or to go onto higher and further education.</p>
<p style="line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 0cm; ">90% of young people taking part in Making Tracks saw an improvement in their musical practise and 85% reported that they have improved confidence and self-esteem.</p>
<p style="line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 0cm; ">Making Tracks was supported by Youth Music and using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, as well as support from match funders Youth Sector Support Fund.</p>

<p>Adam Devonshire (AKA Dev), bass player with Bristol based UK album chart topping post punk band IDLES, headed to Trinity to share his professional<span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; color: #202124; "><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "> </span></span>experience with emerging musicians<span style="color: rgb(32, 33, 36); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "> </span>on Trinity's music making project <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks</a>.</p>

<p>Dev spoke in great detail about the Idles ethos, song writing, musical inspiration, touring, branding and approach to digital streaming. His main advice to the young people who to 'hone your craft, write loads of songs - then scrap those songs and write better ones, play tons of gigs and build a strong local fan base'.  He advised that once this has been achieved this then you can start thinking about moving outwards and attracting more industry attention.</p>
<p>Dev gave insight to Idles early days - playing tiny local bars to virtually no one to supporting the Foo Fighters, touring the world and playing the Park stage at Glastonbury Festival - something which had been a dream for the band right from the very start.</p>

<p>To finish off Dev took a quick fire round in which we learnt his favourite ice cream is mint choc chip, the first single he bought was, ‘Boom! Shake the Room’, by DJ Jazzy Jeff and that one of his favourite films is Shane Meadows bleak cult classic, ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’.</p>
<p>This exciting opportunity was co-created in direct response to feedback from a cohort of students involved in the <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth/news/making-tracks-youth-led-steering-group-launches" class="internal-link">Making Tracks Steering group</a>. This group empowers young people within the project to have their voice amplified and opinions heard, providing them with autonomy and agency helping them to shape and design the Making Tracks’ programme.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks </a>is a life-changing music making project, delivered by Trinity and partners ACE and Basement Studios. The project supports young people to take their next steps in education or work through accessing music provision.</p>
<p>Gh0$t, aka Jack, joined Making Tracks when he was 23 - finding out about the programme through a suggestion by Access Creative College. The college have worked with Trinity for a number of years, often referring students who may benefit from an alternative education setting.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; ">“Jack’s journey has had its challenges, but his passion for music and the support Trinity provided throughout this time has helped to keep him focussed and motivated. Jack has showed a consistent level of dedication and has seen the confidence in his own abilities and talent develop exponentially.” Dave Thomas, Youth Activities Manager</p>
<p>All young people who take part in Making Tracks have individual learning plan. This is created through conversations with students, highlighting what they may want to achieve and input from tutors, identifying key areas of development.</p>
<p>Jack showed an interest in developing his skills in writing original lyrics, rap and learning more about recording his own songs.  He developed his music skills in regular 1-2-1 sessions and attended workshops and opportunities offered throughout the programme. This included workshops with touring artists Keisha Thompson,<a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth/news/beat-boxing-drumming-and-more" class="internal-link"> Making Tracks Summer Music Sessions,</a> <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth/news/benjamin-zephaniah-q-a" class="internal-link">Q&amp;A sessions</a> with industry professionals and <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth/news/making-tracks-at-harbour-festival" class="internal-link">music events</a>. Gh0$t also was active in promoting his own music made during his sessions on social media.</p>
<p>The final part of Jacks development was the opportunity to work as a youth mentor on an <a class="external-link" href="https://www.avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk/news/2021/03/moving-the-conversation-around-knife-crime-forward/">Anti-Knife Crime</a> project. Organised by Avon and Somerset Police and delivered in partnership with local schools, Jack supported students to create a soundtrack for an animation.    Jack was completely dedicated to the process taking part not only as lyric writer and performing artist but also as a consultant, offering musical advice to the students in the project.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; ">“My main motivation … stems from my past. It actually drove me to write and work on this project because I felt I could relate to what these young people go through on a daily basis, but I also wanted to portray the message that you can still make a difference and become something that no one believed you could be.” Gh0$t</p>
<p>Since completing the programme, Jack is working on building his youth work CV and accessing further courses and youth work qualifications - proving his commitment to continue his professional journey.</p>

<p>Youth Music's support of Making Tracks, a two year partnership between Trinity, Ace and Basement, means that we are able to reach young people (11-25) across the city to, means that we are able to reach 100's of young people each year and offer music-making opportunities, including 1-2-1 sessions, industry insights with leading artists,  showcase events, leadership skills and much more.</p>

    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p><a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks</a> is a life-changing music making project for young people, aged 16-25, delivered by Trinity in partnership with ACE and Basement.</p>
<p>The first Steering Group meeting was held on Thursday 15th October. The Steering Group gives Making Tracks participants a chance to share their opinions to help shape the programme and opportunities to connect with others on the programme.</p>
<p>The meeting was led by Steering Group Producer, Amber Watsonn, who is on a work placement through BE IT - a radical leadership programme run by <a class="external-link" href="https://rising.org.uk/">Rising Arts Agency</a>.</p>
<p>Amber is dedicated to improving representation in thearts sector and is bringing her passion for empowering and championing young people's voices into the steering group.</p>
<p>With the help of project intern, <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth/news/new-podcast-series" class="internal-link">Thomas Meadley</a>, Amber invited four young people to take part in this meeting that aimed to be an accessible space and allow for all voices to be heard.</p>
<p>The first part of the session focused on understanding the purpose and aims of the steering group. The session was briefly joined by Dave Thomas, Trinity’s Youth Activities Manager. His contagious enthusiasm for Making Tracks and Youth Music helped spark young people to share their love for the programme.</p>
<p>Young people shared their thoughts on how the Making Tracks project is accessible to them; how it caters to everyone no matter their skill, home life or musical interests. The group shared how much taking part in the project helps support mental health and confidence building. They also commented on the supportive staff that show how much they want to be there and help in any way they can.</p>
<p>Amber then supported the group to share how they may want to shape the project in the future.    This included:</p>
<p>- an online forum for young people to network, share their music, and see news and project updates</p>
<p>- more studio access to record music</p>
<p>- more online resources</p>
<p>- how they can help support the project</p>
<p>The meeting ended, as all good meetings should do, with pizza and an opportunity to discuss the next meeting's agenda.</p>

<p><a class="external-link" href="https://noodsradio.com/info">Noods Radio</a>, the independent radio station broadcasting from Bristol's Stokes Croft, have raised money for new equipment for Trinity’s life-changing music making programme, <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks</a>.</p>
<p>The release of the 11 track Hypha compilation CD, earlier this year, saw all profits being donated to the youth music project; with South West cider Thatchers providing match funding for the purchase of mic stands, mics and other technical equipment.</p>
<p>The new equipment means the young people who take part in the project have access to professional equipment to gain skills and confidence through music making.</p>
<p>We are really grateful to Leon Patrick and Jack Machin, owners of Noods Radio, who contacted us to offer their support to the project.</p>

<p><span class="discreet">Jamell has shaped a career in event programming at Trinity over ten years, including Benjamin Zephaniah as part of Trinity Presents. </span></p>
<p>Jamell joined the Trinity team in 2010, as part of the Future Jobs scheme, starting in an entry level role, as Events Assistant. Ten years later, as Venue Manager, he reflects on the importance of the opportunity.</p>
<p>“2009, I was fresh in Bristol and fresh out of university.</p>
<p>I had come from the city of Plymouth, where I studied Fine Art and recorded some of the infrequent club events.   I wanted to continue my new passion within the arts. I refused to get a job I had no passion for.</p>
<p>One day, I passed Trinity. I loved the look of the place and had to find out what happened there. Luckily for me, Trinity was involved in a 6-month Future Jobs Fund programme through the Job Centre.</p>
<p>I started my journey as the Events Assistant and helping with the Youth Music Programme. During this time, I learnt so much about the amazing work that Trinity does and the passion the team has for each project.</p>
<p>I didn’t want this dream job to come to an end and was elated to be given the opportunity to stay on. I learnt so much from the team; from community bookings and weddings, to developing my skills enough to organise our own NYE events and annual Garden Party - which is the most notable accomplishment, growing the audience every year, with a diverse line up of Bristol talent.</p>
<p>With the development and progression of the role over the years, I am honoured to say I am now the Venue Manager of this wonderful organisation and look forward to what the future holds for the Centre.”</p>
<p>Jamell was able to pursue a career in the creative industries through the Future Jobs Fund. Opportunities like this, and the newly announced Kickstart Scheme, work towards diversifying the workforce in the sector.</p>
<p>We continue to create internships and employment opportunities as part of our project activity. Through our youth programme, <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks</a>, young people enhance their employability through music making. With the economic impact of Covid-19 still to be fully experienced, opportunities like this are even more important.</p>

<p><strong> With the DWP's announcement of the Kickstart Scheme, Trinity explores what such jobs might mean for the Creative industries</strong></p>
<p>People from lower socio-economic backgrounds make up just 12% of the workforce in the creative industries, despite being 44% of the UK population and the Creative Industries Federation highlight the inherent inequality within the creative and cultural workforce across almost every protected characteristic.<br />Covid-19 will mean high unemployment for young people, as well as having profound impact on the cultural and creative industries.Diversifying the creative industries remains high on the agenda with the Creative Industries Federation citing lack of diversity still a persistent failing across the sector.</p>
<p><strong>Possible redundancies may only serve to harm representation through the loss of junior workforce.</strong></p>
<p>At a time when we need to do more to create alternative pathways, the challenge has been compounded by the pandemic with more experienced people willing to volunteer time or remain in lower-paid roles and less job-mobility at senior or executive level.</p>
<p>The announcement of more detail about the Government's Kickstart Scheme in September 2020 offers some hope - with opportunities created for paid employment for unemployed 18-24yr olds.</p>
<p>But it is by no means a magic bullet and must be accompanied by strong youth provision to ensure that those who stand to gain most from such placements are given every opportunity to access and succeed in any roles created.</p>
<p>Though many will know Trinity as one of the most loved and iconic music venues in the city, what many don't know is that Trinity has delivered youth arts training since 2005, providing creative courses for young people, with a focus on working with those Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET), in partnership with Education Unlimited, City of Bristol College, Weston College, as well as Bristol’s wider youth sector.</p>
<p><strong>Personal development through creative expression can be a critical factor in a young person's success.</strong></p>
<p>Since 2018 we have led a <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Youth Music funded consortia</a> with Basement Studio and Aspiration Creation Elevation working with 250 young people from challenging circumstances annually, giving them a chance to realise their potential through participation in arts and culture, giving access to free music-making which has truly been a life-changing opportunity for those who come through our doors.</p>
<p>Through our a decade of delivery, we are now part of a network of specialist providers who support with referrals, pastoral care and progression. Being part of this network who work to support the needs of NEET young people is a combined effort it is clear that, in most cases, multiple cross-sector agencies are involved in supporting a young person on their journey. The success of Kickstart in really changing the lives of those who need this chance the most rests on the ability to mobilise a cross-sector approach and support employers to help them realise the potential of a diverse young workforce.</p>
<p>Trinity has been part of a number of youth education and employment schemes historically, including The Future Job Fund, cited by NIESR as one of the most successful back-to-work schemes in history. Schemes such as FJF and the Creative Employment Programme have meant that we have been able to provide 33 young people aged 18-24 through with paid-internships since 2009, providing alternative pathways into creative industries.</p>
<p>Though not always perfect, they show us that <strong>this investment can provide a critical pathway into the creative workforce</strong> - over 1/4 of young people taken on via an internship remained employed at Trinity beyond the grant-funded post, including our Venue Manager Jamell, who started with us in 2010 on a 6mth FJF placement.</p>

<p>The Trinity Centre, Bristol is to release a new podcast series created by young people who take part in the life changing music making project, <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks</a>.</p>

<p>The podcast features interviews with leading musicians about their musical and personal journeys. Upcoming guests include Dizraeli (World Music Awards nominee), Sam Brookes (Sunday Times ‘Breaking Act’) and Kathryn Williams (Mercury Prize nominee).</p>
<p>The Making Tracks Podcast is hosted and created by project participant Thomas Kam Meadley. Diagnosed with leukaemia in 2017, Thomas Kam Meadley spent 9 months in isolation, during which time he took part in a Making Tracks outreach session in hospital.</p>
<p>“My experience made me realise the important of music in our lives, how it helps through hard times and how it connects us to others” says Thomas. <p>When lockdown restrictions were announced Trinity's Music Team worked to move <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks</a> activity online.</p>
<p>So now instead of sessions in our building, young people meet with Tutors online for weekly music making sessions.</p>
<p>Since Mar 16, the team have worked with over 15 young people delivering music production workshops in: vocal tuition, guitar and bass tuition, songwriting, music production and skill sharing sessions. Tutors have also been creating online content, including short videos in industry skills and<a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/ignite/presents-online/learn-piano-triads" class="internal-link"> improving musical abilities</a>. Emerging musicians from <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks</a> including <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth/news/sams-story" class="internal-link">Sam Neal </a>have provided soundtracks.</p>

<p>Partners ACE and Basement Studios continue to provide provisions, including checking in with young people online and providing workshops and bespoke masterclasses.</p>
<p>Trinity have hosted a virtual<a class="external-link" href="https://www.bristolplaysmusic.org/hub/3rd-space-music/"> 3rd Space</a> meeting, where organisations who provide music services for young people across Bristol come together and talk about ideas.</p>
<p>Making Tracks team members have also joined Youth Music’s online sessions; learning from and inputting to the wider sector transition to online working, safeguarding and working with young people who might not have access to equipment.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks </a>Tutor Pete is a drummer, keyboard and piano, backing vocalist and percussion player who has industry skills and experience in live performance, touring, street performance, studio work, event promotion, sound engineering, stage coordination, festival booking and organisation.</p>
<p>Pete plays in Bristol based Hip Hop outfit Almatic, as well as hot jazz and swing band the Gin Bowlers, and Bluegrass and Country band Feral Mouth. As well as multi tasking the management of several projects including running a rehearsal studio, providing PA and backline to events around Bristol and Norfolk, he teaches drums from his studio in Bristol.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>Since graduating from Southampton University in 2017 with a 1st in BA Music, <a href="https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/music-youth" class="internal-link">Making Tracks</a> Tutor Bethany has been a working professional multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, and the creative director/song-writer of her own artistic project, <a class="external-link" href="https://stanlaey.com/">STANLÆY.</a></p>
<blockquote class="pullquote">"I like to teach practical music making, and experimentation"</blockquote>
<p>Bethany is an avid producer, producing and recording nearly all of her own music and videos, and is keen to inspire other young women to get into producing their own music. She has toured the UK with her band, and played festivals such as Glastonbury, Boomtown, and Shambala.</p>
<p>Her latest solo EP has recently been featured on BBC radio 6. She is currently working on her next new full length album.  Bethany has been working professionally as a teacher since graduating, at schools, with trinity, and as a private tutor (she also teaches piano, viola, violin, guitar, harp and vocals.)</p>
<p>She is an advocate of young people finding their own voice (be it vocally, instrumentally or in musical production) and offers an informed but creative space for young people to explore this in.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>Max is a young man who has been coming to Trinity off and on for the past year. He started playing the drums at the age of 12 but in recent years had no access to a drum-kit so stopped playing.</p>
<p>Making Tracks has provided Max with weekly lessons, teaching him the rudiments of drumming for the first time and creating opportunities for him to realise songs he had written in his head for years.</p>
<blockquote class="pullquote">“I've never really had the facilities and encouragement to do this before, but I'm making these steps, and although they're not speedy they’re at a pace that I’m comfortable with and I'm really enjoying the journey.” Max</blockquote>
<p>During the course of the year Max has found it easier to retain musical information, and both his confidence and musical ability have improved significantly.</p>
<p>He shows great insight into the value of projects like Making Tracks and the benefits they offer to young people like him who may suffer from anxiety or self-doubt and therefore not push themselves forward: “I think it's important that that's what these places do, they try to encourage people who aren't fully out of their shells or fully know what they want to do, to explore things and just have fun with it, because it shouldn't be a stressful thing, not knowing what you want to do.”</p>]]></content:encoded>
